The songs are always there. You're just noticing them differently.

What is it that you're refering to?

I find that when I have had my heartbroken, whether it is romantically related or a death in the family or some other form, I tend to seek out sad songs. When I feel ok I think that it is silly to do that because I think it only makes me feel worse. But, even if I do cry because of something sad that has happened to me, the music is therapeutic. It helps look back at the whole situation and think of all the stuff that was good and bad. There is this one song that makes me think of my grandfather and who he was as a person every time I hear it. The last couple years on the anniversary of his death I listen to it over and over again. My family thinks it is morbid, but I tend to think that it makes me feel better and helps me cope.

It's the great thing about music. I think listening to happy cheerful songs when you're sad is like having that insincere friend that tries to tell you that you should be happy and just have a good time. It's not consistent with how I'm feeling. Why would I listen to "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands" when I feel like listening to "Last Goodbye". You know?

I used to listen to industrial and metal after breakups. And Leonard Cohen.

I find that when I am heartbroken all those lovey cliches actually make sense.

Huh... I'm right there with you. And, to repeat what the others have said; I search out the sad songs at times like this. Because though they don't necessarily make me feel any better, they fit with the mood. Happy music seems out of place and further aggravates me. I'd rather listen to sad stuff and wallow for a bit, because they make sense right now. Especially after finishing a nice bottle of pinot noir by myself...

edit: drunken misspelling as "aggrivation" fixed upon later review.

I don't have the attention span or desire to listen to anything beyond a song here or there.

That's all I have to say about that.

i'm talking romantic heartbreak.
my heart was just ripped out, torn to shreds and then stomped on.

and....that damn jakob dylan song that goes 'and that same black line that is drawn on you is drawn on me and now it's drawing me in.... 5th avenue heartache.... ' (or however it goes) had me hiding out in the freaking tool section with tears running down my eyes.

 (ok. i gotta laugh at myself.....because, well, you know.....i just gotta keep seeing the humor.)

you know what...NORMALLY i, too, seek out the sad songs when i'm down. i like to wallow in it for a bit. then pick myself up and move on. but i can't bear to listen to them right now. they're killing me.

so, my whole hour long drive home from a friends' today was spent searching for upbeat songs. and, really. there weren't as many as i would've liked on the radio. and with the cds i have in my car....well, i just realized how much 'sad' music i like. :(

this portion of world of hurt was my anthem for the past 24 hours

"To love is to feel pain" there ain't no way around it
The very nature of love is to grieve when it is over
The secret to a happy ending is knowing when to roll the credits
Better roll them now before something else goes wrong
No, it's a wonderful world, if you can put aside the sadness
And hang on to every ounce of beauty upon you
Better take the time to know it there ain't no way around it
If you feel anything at all

it's gonna be a world of hurt

my parents had big issues with me dating my boyfriend, so i was practically forced to break up with him (we got back together the same day) but that portion of the day where i thought we weren't going to be together anymore was really shitty. when i turned on the tv those fucking diamond commercials were on where the guy is kissing the girl and has her in his arms, and i dont know, i'd walk into my front yard and see the grass and remember how we used to sit in the grass and talk and listen to music, and even fucking rocks and tree stumps or something completely irrelevant to my relationship with him made me cry.
so if stumps and grass can make me cry, a song will make me sob. when you have your heart broken life sucks because nothing seems happy anymore... and you know, being happy can sometimes be a good thing.

This may be caused by a medical condition other than a broken heart. I'd get it checked.

there are very few happy songs in this world
and the ones that are are happily in love, and those are sad songs when you have your heart broken.

You should have said something like:

"All these unbelievably low, low prices on brand name merchandise close-outs are overwhelming me."

Breakups suck. I'm sorry, sweetie. Hang in there.

As for why you only hear sad songs, yeah, sometimes I listen to that sort of thing to help me wallow in my pain a bit more, and hope that will speed up the grieving process in some way.

What I find abhorrent is when you're listening to some crap pop song by bubblegum pop princess du jour, and you actually can identify with it. That's just depression for ya.

Look at the bright side.
Breakups mean you are free to date* someone else.

* - make out with**

** - have sex with

Hell- I tear up every time I'm in Big Lots, but mostly because I'm in Big Lots.

Being an old married sumbitch, I haven't felt that way in a long time, but back in the day when I would go through that, I would retreat to political music like the Minutemen becaue it allowed me to feel something on an emotional level, but not so much the feeling of loss.

Just my two cents.
