Me neither.

This was a year or two ago, though.

i saw their setlist next to thurston's feet, and teenage riot was on it.

They didn't run overtime or were running out of time or anything, they just omitted it from the setlist.

that is really annoying.

i usually don't like looking at set lists when i have the chance because i want each song to be a little surprise, but i just can't help myself sometimes.

You must've pissed them off. They were like "fuck it, these little twats don't deserve it." Let's play the middle section of Diamond Sea instead.

the crowd was actually really good. Lots of love there.

I liked the way they brought the songs from Rather Ripped to life in a live setting. A good show. SHitty encore though. They came back on just to play fucking schizophrenia.

I think they didn't play it last time I saw them either. I'd rather hear something else in my opinion. Yes, its a high-energy song, thats fun to pogo to, but let's face it, its become kind of cliched when dealing with SY.

I would love to hear Diamond Sea in a live setting.

it's blatant disrespect of your audience, especially in a festival setting. They were headling, everyone wanted teenage riot. It's cliched Sonic Youth because its an awesome fucking song. They should have played it.

And also cos they don't come to this part of the world that often, and when they do it costs $60+ to see them.

And it's smart business - why not play your signature tune and also one of your most catchy at a festival when you have the chance of converting new fans (not that I advocate they play all hits, but as a fan when I'm at festivals I want to pogo around, not head nod to an extended jam)

They did the same when they were here 2 years ago amgl - only songs from Murray Street and Sonic Nurse in the main set. But at least for our encore we got Kool Thing and White Kross

blatant disrespect? that's taking it a little too far. maybe they just didn't want to play it... i mean, if you're a big sonic youth fan or even like them in the slightest i'm sure not hearing teenage riot live isn't that big of a deal. they have put out much better shit than that one song. that song is good, but it's definitely far from the best... although if you asked me what their best song is i probably couldn't answer.

How is it disrespectful? That statement reminds me of Homer in a Simpsons episode where he wants BTO to keep playing "Taking Care of Business". Look, if you're there to hear one song, then I think that's disrespectful. I think it much more outlandish that you would be put off by one song not being played, and completely rubbishing the rest of the set because of that point. Its disrespectful to limit a band, a band with over 20 years of material no less, to one song. Perhaps they weren't feeling it. Perhaps they made a mistake. Perhaps Thurston didn't have access to the right guitar for it. Infinite reasonings could be played out, but I highly doubt being a dickhead is one of them.

okay blatant disrespect is maybe a little harsh.

It was still good, i just wanted to hear teenage riot.

I have to wholeheartedly agree with everything Telescope said.

They rarely come here, at least give us some Teenage Riot. I know it definitely would get boring playing your most beloved song a lot, but at least pull it out when you're coming to Australia.

I mean shit, they'll probably come back once or twice, if ever again.

Do you think bands get sick of playing the same stuff over and over, night after night?

maybe some.

depeche mode, among many others, play the same set every night of a tour. sure, dave gahan might let the crowd sing the entirety of "personal jesus" or some other monstrous hit, but they're still playing the same exact set list for over a month straight.

I remember when I went to see Superchunk the crowd spend virtually the whole gig shouting for 'Slack Motherfucker' which Superchunk refused to play.

I would have liked to hear 'Slack Motherfucker' but at the same time I'd rather not hear people shouting for it between every fucking song during the concert.

You're there to see the band, not hear a song.

when i saw !!! a few years ago, they claimed to not even know how to play "intensify." at the time, they only had that first album. now, that is ridiculous.

I don't think any band wants to be reduced to a single song, and of all of the long-touring acts out there, I think Sonic Youth certainly has a right to resist that. How many thousand times do you think they've played that song live? You, know it's entirely possible that in the course of a show they could forget whether or not they had played it, I think. I could forgive them if they stopped playing "Teenage Riot" live for a while, but then, I've seen them play it twice. I would rather hear "Schizophrenia", personally.

I'll add once again into the mix that if you've been to SY shows you know that they are constantly changing guitars...due to seperate tunings, etc. I think its more than possible that the guitar/bass/effect pedal used for Teenage Riot may have not been working properly, and you may not have been privy to it. I've seen it happen with bands before.

Creator of thread: you're a jackass. You remind me of the shitholes that were present when I saw Dinosaur Jr., who kept shouting for Freak Scene over and over again. Do you expect every band to play a greatest hits set every time they come to Austrailia just because they don't come around very often? Teenage Riot isn't even close to the best song on Daydream Nation alone. They're excited about their new songs now...they DID just come out with a new album. I'm glad they didn't play it, just because of bitches like you.

Oh yeah, I've seen them play Teenage Riot before, and it was awesome.

so true. reminds me of the last time i saw elliott smith. town hall, one guitar, one mic, totally intimate considering the size of the venue, and these 2 morons kept yelling out 'sweet adeline' the whole fucking time.

back to sonic youth:
the song is 18 years old already. if i had to play the same song for 18 years i'd shoot myself. luckily i lost all my short term memory in a horrible billiards accident so none of my songs are more than 5 minutes old or -
wait, what were we talking about again?

It was at a fucking festival man, not some scene as shit low key fans only SYR gig. And I wanted to hear Teenage Riot.

The reason i was pissed was because it was on the setlist, and they didn't play it. Also, the one song encore was annoying.
