What Have I Done-Feat. Christina Carter
You Made It-Feat. Chris James
Enuff-Feat. Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker
Dats My Part-Feat. E-40

It definitely looks like it’ll be more of a straight up hip hop album than previous albums. Here's a short review of the album, written by someone else:

I really can't see your typical DJ Shadow fan going crazy to the hyphy beats on this album, but hey prove me wrong. Meanwhile those dudes who are planning on buying the album 'cause it's got E40 and David Banner on it should probably wait for the promised Bay Area EP, which will round-up all the hyphy essentials in one complete package (nh). Personally I quite liked parts of it, but felt it completely lacked cohesion. Lurking inside 'The Outsider' are three pretty good EPs struggling to get out. Selective downloading shall be the order of the day.

I don't know what "hyphy" means and want to know. URB used it a lot in their article with Shadow. Thanks for the track Pacific.

Wikipedia Wrote:
Hyphy (pronounced high-fee; IPA: [ˈhaɪfiː]]) is a gimmicky and fadish style of music and dance associated with Bay Area hip hop culture. It began to emerge in early 2000 as a response from Bay Area rappers against commercial hip hop for not acknowledging the Bay for setting trends in the hip hop industry.[1] Although the "hyphy movement" has just recently seen light in mainstream America, it has been a long standing and evolving culture in the Bay Area. The momentum that the movement has been getting in recent media lately gives the indication that the Bay Area hyphy movement is long over due to be the next big thing in Hip Hop. The term is a combination of the words "hype" and "fly".[2]

It is distinguished by gritty, pounding rhythms, and is characterized by uptempo beat patturns as opposed to the slower, heavy bass feel of crunk music in the South. An individual is said to "get hyphy" when they act or dance in an overstated and ridiculous manner. Many in the Bay Area would describe this as acting "Retarded", "Riding The Yellow Bus", "Stupid" or "Going Dumb".

the concept of this new album isn't meant to be another "entroducing." there's a great article on him in this month's issue of urb magazine.

can't wait to hear this.

i'm happy he's doing something fun, something tells me he's enjoying the hell out of himself. I'm also pretty sure I won't like it. Still, good for him.

I read the article in the new Urb that someone gave me (which he specifically states he doesn't want 30 year old dudes on the internet debating his music  Sorry Josh) & I was trying to figure out who in the last 10 years I hate more for changing, Shadow or Urb. That Shadow cover story B+ came out of retirement to write 10 years ago is an article Urb will never get close to again. And at the same time Entroducing is something Shadow will never come close to again. But I came to the conclusion before Shadow made Entroducing he was making straight up Hip Hop & in this album he's returning to it & as long as it's his vision I gotta respect that even if I don't like the new album (I'm predicting I'll be luke warm on it). Whereas Urb is so far away from Raymond Rokers vision that made it so great for the first decade & such a clear sell-out, I can't respect it.

I like your take on this, but what of his prior material would you consider straight-up hip-hop? In/Flux?

i feel you man, but I think Shadow at least is capable of returning to form, on top of the fact that anyone who's ever listened to the guy talk for more than 5 minutes can tell this is the sort of album he's always wanted to do. I don't blame him for it at all, but that doesn't mean I'm going to suddenly realize that hyphy is an art form I hadn't fully grasped before someone like Shadow decided to get into it.

URB, on the other hand, has never aspired to be a third rate shitrag that exposes their "next big artists" 3 1/2 years too late and a Maxim-esque propensity to run pounds of fashion shoots and shots of 14 year olf ravers. Can't wait for the next DJ Rap cover, retards.

he did a bunch of production work for solesides (now quannum). if i'm remembering right, he produced the first solesides record for lyrics born (then called asia born) called "send them." his production is all over solesides greatest bumps. and i think his first record was a remix of a song by the lifer's group

No, I'm going waaay back... I was thinking more the beats he made for Paris.

Back to Urb real quick- The thing that made Urb so dope for years & years was Roker liked Detroit Techno (and it's offshoots) & Hip Hop and decided to present them together no matter how much resistance he got from readers & industry pundits. He stuck by his guns that they came from the same sources & are a lot closer than what some would have you believe. The combo turned out like chicken & waffles, people either said "WTF?!?!" or "GIMME SOME MORE!!". There was so much infighting with ravers hating Hip Hopers & vice versa. Every issue had letters from both sides begging Roker to drop the other. But by the mid to late 90's most big raves in this country had Hip Hop acts or Turntablist & actually it became the biggest outlet for the underground Hip Hop scene. I gotta believe Urb had a hand in that. No way Urb in it's current form has that type of influence. It's run by focus groups & marketing people. But on the business side the writers are getting paid. There was a long time there early on those writers didn't get anything but exposure

There's something very magical about one single persons vision in this day & age of focus groups & test screenings. Be it a John Waters movie, a DJ Shadow album or a great zine. To make it to the show when so much crap suffers from too many cooks in the kitchen.

But at the same time as much as I rail against Urb, with the internet, Urb is about a fraction as important as it was 10-15 years ago.

are you sure about this? I might've downloaded the wrong thing, but some of this doesn't quite sound right. Especially that song that's supposed to have Lateef and Q-Tip on it. I'm pretty sure I could pick both of these guys' voices out of a lineup, but this sounds accoustic and definitely not wither of one of those two.

no i agree with you...WTF....

here is a description of what the song is like
ENUFF featuring Q-Tip & Lateef The Truth Speaker

This track isn't a million miles away from T.I.'s 'Why You Wanna?', but with an exceptionally annoying chorus that threatens to totally derail the entire exercise. Fortunately the track just about pulls through, in no small part down to Q-Tip who is right back on form as of late.

the track that's labelled as the E-40 track has these two on it. So I think there's some mislabelling here. and some thom yorke outtakes or something.
