Anything from 60's upto the late 70's. I have some staples like Marvin Gaye, Al Green, EW&F, early Nevilles, Etta James, Temptations, Commodores...

I know I'll probably not be a completist for any of these artists. I am looking for front to back great singular albums, but happy to take recs on an essential collections from a particular artist/group. Here's what I am thinking:

Curtis Mayfield-Superfly
Smokey Robinson - Essentials?
Aretha Franklin - ?
Sam Cooke - ?
Otis redding - ?
Wilson Pickett - ?

Also, are groups like The Manhattans, The Spinners, etc. one hit wonders or worth delving into?

Sam Cooke - The Man & His Music
Aretha Franklin - Young, Gifted, and Black
Sam & Dave - The Very Best Of (Rhino)
Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key Of Life, Innervisions, Talking Book, For Once In My Life, Signed Sealed & Delivered
The Impressions - (just get a good comp., as they were a singles band)
Arthur Conley - The Wonderful World Of... (is that what it's called?)

Curtis Mayfield :: Curtis is phenomenal, and I like it better than Superfly
Isaac Hayes :: Hot Buttered Soul

I am the board's biggest Spinners fan. They are DEFINITELY worth delving into!!!

My advice regarding getting your R&B/Soul fix is to pick up the three Stax box sets. I literally could reduce my entire record collection to just that and be happy forever. I am dead serious. GO STAX!

I'd get The Man Who Invented Soul instead, though it doesn't have A Change Is Gonna Come. So get Keep Movin' On too.

Curtis Mayfield is my favorite and I'd disagree with Fu. I prefer Superfly to Curtis although both are essential. For 60's harmonies groups, I prefer the Impressions (which also featured Curtis) to any others. Todd's right that a good anthology or comp is at least the best starting point. I just watched a DVD of Curtis live at Ronnie Scott's last week, which interspurses live footage with interview segments (Paul Weller interviewing him). Its worth seeing if you are a fan.

I'm not actually a very big Motown fan. I bought a bunch when I first started getting into soul but I listen them far less than most of my soul...I find a lot of it to be pretty disposable. That said, a good supremes comp would be a nice addition to your collection. Other Motown artists I like are Leon Ware, Syreeta (Stevie Wonder's Ex-wife) and Willie Hutch.

Aretha Franklin is a definite. "I Never Loved a Man The Way I Love You", "Lady Soul" and "Aretha Now" are probably your best bets if you want the major hits. "Young, Gifted and Black" and "Spirit in the Dark" are also excellent. My very favorite is "Amazing Grace" which is a live gospel recording, and is so mindblowing awesome. But its not really soul.

The Spinners are more than one hit wonders as a good comp willl show. That said, FT is a much bigger fan than I am. I'd put this pretty low on your priority list.

Donny Hathaway is pretty essential...as already recommended, "Everything is Everything" is his best. "Extension of a Man" is nearly as good though.

All of the Stevie Wonders mentioned are pretty essential.

Some other favorites:

Charles Wright "Express Yourself"
Bill Withers "Still Bill"
Eugene McDaniels "Headless Heroes of the Apocalypse"
James Brown "Live at the Apollo", "In the Jungle Groove" (many others if you want)
Terry Callier "What Color is Love"
Eddie Bo "The Hook and Sling"
Isaac Hayes "Hot Buttered Soul"

I'm also a big fan of Joe Bataan and Syl Johnson but I'm not really sure what I'd recommend as an introduction

Pretty much any soul comp from Soul Jazz is worth getting too...especially the Miami and New Orleans ones.

if you want more say so.

Shouldn't we have some kinda mix ready-to-go so it can be YSI'd when the Recommend Me Some thread pops up every other month or so?

I thank you all. Pretty meager selection at the one store I could get to.

Wilson Picket - Greatest hits
Smokey and the Miracles - the best comp I could find, had the staple 12 songs, but no Going to a Go-Go on it, mmmph!
EW&F - Alive in '75 - a strong rockin' live album, you know that 11 min. Reasons version. :rawk:
Curtis Mayfield - 2 disc comp, Euro release

They did not have the Cooke or Redding suggestions, Sam & Dave looked good, but I can only buy so much at one time. This thread will be revisited. Spinners, will check out. Thanks for the suggestions Bort; though, I like me some Motown.

Alot of these songs remind me of sitting in the back seat of my Sister's car while she dragged me around doing errands for the folks smoking a cigarette with the windows down on a hot sunny afternoon and the radio blaring. I had tons of radio listening in the late 70's.

It's been pointed out before on Obner.. this album by Charles Wright and Wattts 103rd St. Band is the underappreciated soul classic of the 70's.

Ah soul, something that is fading in memory... great inspite of the cheeze or because of it:

If you're into digital downloads, the Rhino Music Store has a bunch of 5-song deals called "Hi-Fives", with five songs (duh) for $3.61 for a bunch of artists, including the ones that aren't worth sorting through the proper releases for a handful of good songs.

Let the Good Times Roll - 20 of New Orleans' Finest R&B Classics 1949-1966

You should be able to find it pretty cheap too.
