So, who wants to argue about whether or not Sunny Day Real Estate was the beginning of emo(tional) music?

Because my position is that emo started with classical composition, perhaps with the first purely emo piece being Fur (excuse the lack of umlaut) Elise.

But anyway, the point is that the most recent wave of emo is Garbage...its origins however are quite impressive. Little bands like MxPx and blink182 paved the way for newer lamer bands, while Weezer paved the way for them with the success of the Blue Album in the mainstream.

np: Mxpx - Chickmagnet

i remember when weezer came out and everyone said they sounded like a major label version of pavment. seems off now, but i remember tons of people saying/thinking. I saw them open for Live and NO ONE cared. I didn't realize who they were utill they played the sweater song. My friend interviewed River and he was really pissed off about the pavement comparisons.

i hear two names most often for being the "start" of emo

cap n' jazz and rites of spring.

Yeah. RoS, at least, predates all the others.

Rites Of Spring is what I hear mentioned the most, but I don't think I've actually heard anything by them.

SDRE's Diary is the first album I listened to and thought "wow, this is old school emo."

I think it would be ridiculous to argue about the origins of emo... or anything to do with emo, for that matter. But I have to say, I don't think MxPx has anything to do with emo. Pop-punk all the way. That's just my opinion.

rites of spring is oft-referred to as the first emo band. obviously, the lyrical side has now taken over as what is emo, but their music is pretty great too.

saying something is emo is only slightly more descriptive than saying something is "rock"

cap n' jazz sound NOTHING like dashboard, and both are considered emo.

I am pretty sure Blink 182 and MxPx should never be refered to as emo.

SDRE was my first "experience" with emo and I love it. But I sure as hell don't see how SDRE and MxPx are related in any way.

I remember one of the first times I heard the word "emo" was in relation to Quicksand.

I'd say some more recent bands that walk that oh-so-fine line between pop/punk and emo pretty much split the difference between those two bands' aesthetic, in one bastardized way or another. Take, for example, DC's old band Further Seems Forever.

i don't think gauche is saying MxPx and Blink 182 were emo, he's just saying that they paved the way for crappy bands that have been tagged emo by the sweeping arm of the masses. but i disagree with that as well!

In my opinion, it's about the motives behind the emoting.
Before emo was popular, I believe people were in emo bands because they wanted an outlet for their personal, honest feelings whilst rocking out.

MxPx - These guys came from the Christian punk scene, and smartly double-dipped into both the bible-thumper and pop punk markets. The lyrical motive behind their records was God, and musically they camped with Green Day, Bracket, Lagwagon, and Blink 182. You can see their influence in bands like Maryz Eyez, and whole bunch of 90s Tooth & Nail bands (Slick Shoes in particular) that no one now remembers.

Blink 182 - These guys came from the SoCal skater punk scene, and smartly ripped off MxPx and the Fat Wreck Chords roster. Very immature lyrics. You can see their influence in a whole bunch of 90s Warped Tour bands that no one now remembers.

Oh, and the motives behind many emo bands currently is to look cool and to get girls.

Roots of emo go back to Husker Du, though that's insulting Husker Du a bit.
