Yeah, I have that problem, too. I always have to think for a minute, and I usually forget about whatever I've been obsessed with the most.

Sounds like we're all in the same boat. When asked that question, I usually reply with "I have fairly eclectic taste in music" and I hope they leave it at that.

At a work training class recently, I was asked by the instructor what kind of music I like. This was an ice breaker in front of the whole class of about 100 people. I said "oh, fairly obscure stuff" and hoped that he'd leave it alone. Of coure not. He asked me what I had been listening too lately so I quickly tossed out something like The Constantines, Camera Obscura, and The Black Keys. Everybody just stared at me like I was a child molester or something.

Some of you guys are complete jackasses about the music you listen to. It's one thing if you like it, but it's another thing to think you're BETTER than other people because of it.

Specifically, these two comments:

1. the "somewhat commercial band" comparison
2. the "stop being spoon-fed" conversation

found in this thread make me want to kick some people in the face

Oh yeah.

I only get this question at work (because I have no social life otherwise), so I just point to the stack of 10 CDs on my desk and say "Here's what I brought today." They look, recognize 3 of them, their eyes glaze over, and they leave.

I am rarely asked this question.

But when I am asked, that's what generally happens.

Lately I have been job interviewing and occasionally one of the interviewers will ask about my music since I list going to shows as an interest...ugh...trying to explain indie rock to them is an exercise in futility.
