i'll recommend: Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time

it was short, sweet and fascinating and i rarely read historical non-fiction.

Did that book tell the bit about Booth's killer and his self-castration?

Boston Corbett was mentioned obviously a lot, but his genitalia only received about a paragraph. of course a mental image popped in my head as I read that part. damn.

No thanks on the Rwanda book, Red. Thanks though.

The Capote looks like a good one, as does the longitude one. Thanks.

And yea, The Devil book is a must read for really anyone. I remember toting it on the CMJ board.

Couldn't disagree more. I found it stylistically clumsy and bland.

Ill second this

and a personal fav. although not sure if it is 'historical' in the sense you want is

Zero (the biography of a dangerous idea) by Charles Seife - a history of the idea of 0-- quite interesting.

This book is insanely good and pretty horrific at the same time. Great read. If I hadn't left all my college books in California I would be tempted to think about just sending you my copy to read.

Or, if you're into a lengthy read, you could read the Autobiography of Emma Goldman. That was one crazy woman.

Both of these are good. I would also recommend: Daniel Boone: The Life and Legend of an American Pioneer

The Autobiography Of Malcolm X
is an essential for any human, IMO.
So much more than what most people expect.

And, perhaps, my favorite book of all-time.
