I've said this before Bilz, but I think its a crime and a damn shame that Rutgers doesnt compete at a higher level in College FB just based on the talent in New Jersey alone.

They need to send their coaches to intern with SEC schools to learn the finer points of 'cruitin.

Not that I have been to Rutgers nor really know the quality of the school, but it's always been a traditional patsy when it comes to football, just like Temple and the school just doesn't seem to be that attractive of a choice to a blue chipper. If the Scarlet Knights had been to more than two bowl games in their history, I could see where they'd have something to really build off of and look back to past glory to help build a program around. The fact that they haven't had a first round pick in the NFL really makes a prep star run as far away as possible from Rutgers.
If it were only fellow East Coast schools stealing their talent, they might be able to develop into a Fresno State type team, but Nebraska has recruited a ton of players, including Heisman winner Mike Rozier and First Round pick Irving Fryar.
I don't know how they can keep the best players the state has to offer, especially since their coach is a former Miami/Penn State Assistant with NFL experience. He should already know what the SEC schools could offer him in the way of knowledge.

There is no need to make a joke about Temple, they were kicked out of the Big East and almost dropped down to I-AA.

Here's how much they scored last year and how they did.:
9/1 at Arizona State L 63-16
9/10 at Wisconsin L 65-0
9/17 Toledo L 42-17
9/24 Western Mich L 19-16
10/1 at Bowling Green L 70-7
10/8 Maryland L 38-7
10/15 Miami L 34-3
10/22 at Clemson L 37-7
10/29 Miami Univ. L 41-14
11/5 at Virginia L 51-3
11/19 at Navy L 38-17

The only real embarassments were the Wisconsin and Bowling Green Games, they almost beat Western Michigan, so they got that going for them.

Give 'em time. Schiano's got a plan, and it's starting to bear fruit. We've got commitments from three top in-state players this year, and a couple more again from Florida. Schiano's still young, still building a program, and more importantly, still fleshing out his asst. coaching staff. He took over DC responsibilities half-way through the season last year--not exactly the distraction you want for your head coach.

You would think being halfway between NYC and Philthy would make it a huge draw for talent, but I think the supposed "limelight" actually hurts, since there's so many options other than College ball to garner attention. It's certainly not the only game in town.

Further, the school has always struggled with an identity crisis--historically vying to be the stepchild of the Ivy League academically--the poor man's Princetion. The school is focused way way more on academics than athletics. Duke his a sweet niche with basketball, I think, because they focus on it as their primary athletic initiative. RU is trying to support basketball, football, and the entire panoply of college sports, all while trying not to gain a slack academic reputation--they don't benefit from any particular athletic concentration. This legacy has hurt them, as athletics, historically, are not played up to the student body--folks there have been more interested in crew or soccer than in football or hoops. Hard to create excitement for prospective recruits in that kind of environment.

BTW, saw a GREAT t-shirt when the RU hoops team was out here to play Depaul last year: RU Football 1869 National Champs.

Nah, he's a Jersey guy, and wants to be in Jersey. I think he's honest about it, and I think it's an infectious enough attitude that it helps the in-state recruiting effort--something the school has never had.

No love for the Golden Gophers of Minnesota, I see.

But Minnesota does have the winningest football program all-time in NCAA history with a 526-217-24 (.701) record in 95 seasons. And by Minnesota, I mean St. John's University. And by NCAA history, of course I am referring to Division III.

Go Johnnies!

I thought with all this Rutgers talk, you might find this interesting. I found it on the Huskerpedia Football BBS.

As posted by Huskersnake:
I was also think about east coast, NY area. Lets schedule Rutgers and play them in New Jeresy at the Medowlands. That would be a great recruiting advantage to NU. New York, East Coast.

One step further, lets play West Virgina, Virgina, or Syracuse at the Medowlands. All east coast team, that would draw huge crowds and have a great return game in Lincoln.

RU used to play half of their games at the Meadowlands when I was there. Dreadful location--hour drive from campus, way too many seats (Nebraska's not going to road trip *that* many people), no way to get close to the field...lousy. The refurbished Rutgers Stadium, however, is sweet. I wish RU would schedule a game or two with Northwestern--would love to see 'em in Evanstoned.

The last time Nebraska played in the Meadowlands, the attendance was 58,000+ for the 1994 Kickoff Classic game against West Virginia. I think you'd get 20-30,000 Husker fans for the game at a minimum, that is usually the average for a bowl game.

Miami might be fucked for their huge game with FSU to open the season. Larry Coker suspended Four players including a starting wide receiver. If the Huskers didn't have a bad history with the Canes, I'd be sympathetic.

*sound of toilet flushing*

Auburn suspended two LB's for the first 3 games also for alcohol related arrests. This could have a small impact on the 3rd game against LSU.

Also, Tennessee's had some troubles...

That Oklahoma news is huge, that could basically mean the Big 12 is now a two horse race with Nebraska and Texas being the top two teams. If that is true, then they might end up playing each other twice in a season, which is bad news for the conference. Texas and Colorado played each other twice last year, and the second game was an utter embarassment.
Both games would favor Nebraska due to their locations, but the talent is definitely on Texas's side still.
I'm glad you found this news, but it is crazy. So many of the experts were picking Nebraska and Oklahoma to renew their rivalry in Kansas City for the Big 12 title, now that looks almost impossible.

Also, I hope Tennessee gets raped by the NCAA soon, Fulmer is always narcing on other SEC teams, when it seems like they cheat worse than everyone else.

I created a Yahoo College Football pickem group for this board, it is called the OBNER CFB Challenge. To enter the password is obner.
I decided not to use confidence points, and just go straight up picks according to the spread with a tie breaker included.

Edit: The Group ID number is 1454, you need it and the password to enter.

whoa, easy there...before this happened, you could've given OU a slight advantage over TX at QB due to Bomar having a little experience under his belt...now you're looking at a draw @ the QB position since both teams will have noobs

but everything else would shake out the same...so, if you were saying OU was gonna win the South before this, I don't see how they could suddenly have no chance

In 'presenting four tidbits about the WAC', I read this:

deadspin.com Wrote:
1. The Mark Of The Z. Oh, Boise State. Where to begin? BSU not only participated in, but won the 2005 intercollegiate gay, lesbian and bi-sexual games (sadly, not affiliated with NCAA), and three returning football starters took part in those games ... Head coach Chris Peterson is an avid follower of Scientology and has invited Tom Cruise to serve as an honorary assistant coach during a game this season ... Heisman hopeful quarterback Jared Zabransky was born with a birthmark on his bicep in the shape of the letter "Z" which is uncanny, given his name. He also eats a gigantic loaf of bread before every game as a ritual ... The school allows Boise's homeless people to come and see home games for free and even supplies these people with festive orange Broncos apparel and hot soup. (Thanks to Nick "I'm With Leather" Wollen).

Now, my question: is Boise State a hot-bed of OPEN ghey footballers, or were the intercollegiate Gay Games more of a gay-straight alliance deal, where x number, but fewer than half the competitors, could be non-gay? Either way, the BSU side would appear to be the most gay-friendly in the nation -- take that, "gay for Charlie Weis" FT -- but I'm just curious as to how ghey. Like Salon.com's King Kaufman, I am wondering who the gay Jackie Robinson will be; out during the height of his professional career, and a champion-level competitor ("despite" previous).
