I'm in and in terms of what Z said:

i also think it'd be easier to go backward - making a list of bands that people are interested in, instead of volunteering to make mixes first. i can't imagine there being too many bands that at least one person here can't handle.

What if everyone interested posted a short list of half a dozen bands they feel they know back and front enough to school everyone else on, and then everyone else could suggest which one off their list they should do?

Hell, I would count Yail's FBmix and Rad's Mott mix as 2 of the best I have received.

Maybe I will FINALLY do my mix of bad Stones songs (and even send a copy to Billy G)

1) i'm in. i could do - beck, moby, teenage fanclub, inspiral carpets, chumbawamba, and nofx. probably a bunch more.

2) i think we need not worry about mix length as long as it fits on a single cd.

3) i use slsk, and probably have access to every song the flaming lips ever recorded. however, i'm not going to spend hours upon hours pouring over a dozen albums and eps searching out their career highlights, so if someone could do a flaming lips mix that would be cool.

How about just a Hi-Fives version for all sorts of different artists, and if they overlap, so be it? Just five tracks to capture either a glimpse of an artist, a genre or a segment of an artist's career?

I was just going to say the same thing. I once made a couple of tapes for a friend that were 3 to 5 cuts from different artists that either: 1.) he was curious about, or 2.) that were favorites of mine but he had never heard of.

Not that I'm going to participate or anything. Jus' throwin' out an idea.

This sounds like a good idea, but it's a different idea. I don't think one should be abandoned in favor of the other.

For this, we might as well stick to rparis's idea, but I'd do the "Hi-Fives" thing sometime later. Those could be tailored with specific people in mind since they probably would be easier to make than a typical mix, I would think.

20. pumachik
21. so real
22. dumpjack

Maybe we will get some drops and adds but here is the list.

Now the rules

1. Best of mix of one band. Can include side projects if you really feel the need to include to fully represent a band's output. Lets keep this to a minimum.

2. Keep it to around 15 tracks maximum

3. We will use YSI. We've got around 20 participants so burning cds and shipping them out is too time consuming and costly in my opinion. Let's use the technology we have you neo-luddites.

4. Everyone respond with 5 or so bands that you could make an expert mix on and then everyone on the list selects which ones we want to include here/which ones have interest. Then I will make up a final list and post it.

5. Participants make the mix and send it out to all participants

I would do: The Rolling Stones (the bad  years)

I'd have to look and think real hard to find anything else I might excel at

All sound good, except maybe some of us could do more than one band if we want? You know, if nobody else claims some of the bands you want to do.

Anyway, here are some I could do (more than 5, sorry):
Can (already done)
Magnolia Electric Co/Songs: Ohia/Jason Molina
Flaming Lips
Deerhoof
The Kinks
Stereolab
Mouse on Mars
Silver Jews
Squarepusher

Some of those I've done before, and all of them have more than enough material to fill up a good mix.

I can do:

Liz Phair
Belle & Sebastian
Yo La Tengo
REM
Radiohead
Uncle Tupelo/Son Volt/Wilco/Autumn Defense/Bennett&Burch/Jay Farrar

What I probably will do:
Yo La Tengo
B&S
(since they're already done)
and the UT/SV/W/AD/BB/JF mess

The organization of this is moving along faster than I'd expected. I really can't see myself finding the time to put anything together in the next month. I did one for Elvis Costello for Chase a few years ago and could dig that up quickly but anything else will take much longer. If taking my time is cool, then I'm in but otherwise I'd probably have to pass.

As far as other artists I could do that others probably or maybe couldn't:

(1) Caetano Veloso
(2) Gilberto Gil
(3) Lee Hazlewood
(4) Emmylou Harris
(5) Joni Mitchell
(6) Van Morrison
(7) Townes Van Zandt
(8) Alejandro Escovedo
(9) Jorge Ben
(10) The Buzzcocks (since no one ever seems to listen to anything other than Singles Going Steady)

I'll try to think of others. I could maybe do the Fall, James Brown, Fela Kuti, Aretha Franklin or Curtis Mayfield, but those would be seriously a lot of work that I don't know that I'd find the time for.
