I had an interview exactly one week ago today. I followed by sending out a handwritten thank you card one day after the interview. I'd like to follow up by phone today, but am not sure if it is too soon or not.

Opinions please.

I think I'd wait another. Then again, I've never had a real job interview. The card's a nice touch, though.

I'm not sure I'd work for an employer where the timing (or even presence) of a thank you card determines whether I get hired or not.

I usually wait three days after an interview and contact them if they did not mention when they would make a final decision and have not called me. I believe I was told that was proper protocol during a career counseling class.
For most almost every job I have interviewed for I have heard back within a week about whether or not I got the job.
I've never sent out a thank you letter for an interview, I just include a short thank you on cover letters for considering me for the position.

I agree with you, but it's a polite way of getting a brownie point or two, rather than an obligation.

My boss said he remembers the thank you note my officemate sent him after he interviewed her, and though she was obviously the best candidate, he said it really was a nice touch that further amplified her as the right hire.

depending on the type of job & work environment, in some cases not sending some kind of thank you/follow up would mean you wouldnt get the job.

I think a week is fairly standard. That gives them a chance to compile, and also interview others. Plus, unless you are dealing with a small place, that probably isn't their #1 priority.

I always send a thank you note either via card form or email. I also always follow up a negative on a job (which has been happening a lot lately) with an email thanking them for taking the time. I work in a very "contact" oriented business so, you want to create as many positive relationships as you can.

Such as the place of my current employment. I went ahead and called. Ended up leaving a nice voice message and now eagerly awaiting a call back. The impression I was left with so far is that this person WILL call me back, so now I just have to exercise patience since I've done what I can.

I am excited about this opportunity, so wish me well in getting it. Hopefully I'll have a positive update within the next few minutes/hours/days.

I work in a business where personal relationships is all you have to go on. I haven't met anyone this whole year that has not gotten a thank you from me, with my name engraved on the top of the card.

Many people ignore them, but the ones who notice, really notice. Protocol may seem like something outdated, but remember rich people move in "polite society," so something as simple as taking 5 minutes and $.39 can make a big difference.

And I did not always do this, and can remember a few times when it would have benefited me to do so.

Good luck, juice. I would call em every week on the week til they give you an answer.

i think it's rude when the people who do the hiring don't even have the decency to call you and let you know that they won't be hiring you. but you should call.

always send a thank you note (via email or card) within 24 hours after your interview.

and one week is good for follow-up.

I gotta admit, I am sometimes guilty of this. I often interview twenty people for one position. Sometimes they are really bad canidates and I do call them and let them know I am passing on them. Sometimes, I get their voicemail and won't leave a message because that's a cop out. I think they do deserve to hear from me that I am taking another candidate and be able to ask me questions and ask for interview feedback. I also have many young candidates in which this would be their first real job which is why I like to have a conversation with them.

Sometimes, I don't contact people right away even if I have made a decision because I did see something in them that may benefit the company, but not my location specifically. In that case, I try to pass them along to another manager who may be better benefitted by their employment.

I always give everyone my card with the store number and my cell on it. I tell them that if they don't hear from me by x day to call me. If they don't--I don't hire them even if I was going to because obviously they are:
unable to follow directions
lazy
not interested any longer
unable to honor committments

You should always call--I have only gotten a thank you note once but I hired them.

Ok, next step. As I said before, I did call and leave a message this morning. Should I try back at the end of the day if I have not heard from him or let it go until tomorrow?

I'm guilty of this, but I'm not gonna say I felt very good about it.

call between 2-4, that's usually after lunch time. people are friendlier after lunch, because most of the hectic stuff happens in the morning.

No if you left a message, give him a couple of days to get back to you. If you don't want to give that courtesy don't leave the message. As far as times to reach people...the easiest time generally is after 5pm when the assistant or secretary has likely left and he'll likely be answering his own line.
