lately i've been noticing that the "hipper" art galleries often have traditional artwork on canvas or wood hanging, but then around the hung work there is paining on the walls. The show is presented as a singular entity, a whole image that works together through the whole gallery as the paintings on the wall intertwine with the hung "for sale" work

part of me thinks this is cool, to see everything working together.

But then all the pieces are bought up, the walls get painted over and the pieces go home to peoples houses and have a life without the rest of the pieces.

part of me is sad that these moments are brief and ephemeral. As i'm not a huge fan of the gallery experience the only time the art as a whole is seen is in the gallery. I don't know why, but i like the idea that artwork is forever in a static pause for the rest of time. Something about the ephemeral aspect rubs me the wrong way. I think this makes me hopelessly dated and ignoring the ethos of the last 60 years of art . . . but there i am.

Maybe they should hire the artist to come and be ephemeral at their house.
