John Coltrane | Modal & Hard Bop: 1957-1964 (75:00)

I limited the mix to Coltrane's early (and more accessible) recordings and left them in chronological order by date of release. If you enjoy the mix, I highly encourage you to pick up any of the recordings regularly touted as his best (Blue Train, Giant Steps, A Love Supreme, My Favorite Things, etc.). They've each been remastered, contain wicked liner notes, and can generally be had for a few bucks apiece.

I know it's not something everyone can get into, but for those who can, enjoy...

From Wikipedia: John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 – July 17, 1967) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Though he was active before 1955, his prime years were between 1955 and 1967, during which time he reshaped modern jazz and influenced successive generations of other musicians. Coltrane's recording rate was astonishingly prolific, such that many albums did not appear until years after they were recorded. He is regarded as one of the most important and influential jazz musicians, and one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century.

Oh, word. Thanks. I'm gonna put one of these together at work this week, instead of working.

Thanks. I keep telling myself I need to give jazz a go but never get round to it

Sure thing, Dalen. I actually zipped a cd cover file (with tracklisting) in with the mix but don't have immediate access to it here at work (w/o d'loading it). Should've included it to begin with and will post it later today.

Cool. Interested to see what you picked for this. I actually don't have many albums with Coltrane as leader, just the four mentioned in the first post and a couple of later ones with Pharoah Sanders. Thanks for posting this.

My Can mix will be up soon as well. Hopefully tomorrow.

Each and every one are brilliant. Way to go.

'Naima' might be the most beautiful piece of music ever recorded-
