...there goes the neighbourhood.

Nine dollars for a sixer of tooheys pilsener. That wont make sense to any of you except telescope and maybe splates, but damn, that's cheap.

Out of the 'mainstream' beers?

Well the best of the semi-readily-available breweries are:

James Boag's, Cascade, Malt Shovel Brewery (James Squire).

Any of those's premiums are pretty much a sure-fire treat. A little pricey, but if you look around enough, you can find them cheaper.

But the best beers i've ever had are normally exclusive to a brewhouse or self-brewing bar.

My favourite when i take into consideration all variables is Toohey's Pilsener or Cooper's Pale Ale: a good balance between taste and price.

just whatever you do, stay away from Foster's. It's kind of a running joke that no one in this entire vast continent drinks it, but it's our chief export beer...

Kind of like how the only American beers we get are Budweisers and Miller's Genuine Draught. No man ever did anything bad enough in a past life to endure Budweiser. Or do y'all like it?

Busch beer = white trash beer

CVS = drug store

Southport = street

Shall I send you a 30 pack?

$6 for a case (cans) of Beast Ice at the store across the parking lot from my apt. How can you not get drunk on little dough?

White trash beer?

A guy living in a park once showed me how to filter purple methylated spirits through a slice of mighty white bread. It goes crystal clear. Add 5 parts of that to 1 part goon, and you're sweet. Or so he reckons.

That's better than any white trash beer.

sounds better. yikes.

In college, I once drank something that ate through a plastic bag. I'm still not sure what it was, but boy was that one hell of a night.

Here in Hawaii I can really only find Foster's unless I go to a beer "boutique" store which is mega-expensive. You can't even find other Australian beers at Outback Steak House, go figure. Shame really.

A corner store in my home town used to sell chilled metho in the fridge alongside bottles of milk and coke, so that the black fellas didn't have to drink warm metho.

Nowadays in Australia, you can't even buy methylated spirits or oil-based paint until they suss you out and show them I.D. because of all the metho-drinking and chroming.

Foster's tastes like watered-down cat piss. Avoid at all costs.

All foreign beer afficionados i've drank with have assured me good Aussie beer is up there with the best of 'em. But we have lots of bad beer too.

Dan Murphy's?

I'm insanely jealous. The nearest one to me is a good 20min drive away. If only I did health sciences, since you pass right by it on the way there from main campus.

Don't tell 'em that! We've got our Crocodile Dundee reputation to uphold here!

...which it seems Outback Steakhouse is doing admirably

Nah it's not Dan Murphy's, but it's still pretty good. Called First Choice Liquor.

The nearest Dan Murphy's to me is all the way across the river...

Excellent! Was the vodka cheap? There's one of those on Parramatta Road on the way out to hockey. I feel we might need to stop in there next time...

It used to be a Theo's though. Wonder if Coles Myer dumped it or just renamed.

The cheapest vodka is 21 bucks. Tastes a bit solvent-y though. Smirnoff is 24 i think.

Hmmm. That's only a few bucks cheaper than Liquorland. Still, if I buy a few items...

Perusing their website, I'm liking the emphasis that they don't just do tasting of wines.

And the mother is visiting next weekend. I'm thinking we should pay them a little visit

Heh. I love parents who contribute to the cause of their poor student kids' alcohol consumption.

For me, this is the mother who, a couple of months ago when visiting my grandma in hospital in Maitland realised that right next door there happened to be a Dan Murphy's, so called both my bro and I to ask if she could get us anything. I asked for a bottle of Grey Goose thinking she would baulk once she got in there and realised how much it was. But no, in a fine example to mothers everywhere, she bought it for me, as well as whatever my bro wanted and a few bottles of Baileys, 2 of which didn't survive my visit home in the holidays

There were three reasons to drink Fosters when I used to party, none had to do with taste.

1. Big can (which one did not have to share)

2. Cheap.

3. Steel can (which one could challenge drunk acquaintances to smash on foreheads. Which they couldn't do. Injuries and hilarity, or something approximating for a few moments).
