Kiss fans protest Rock Hall of Fame snub

08/06/2006 4:43 AM, AP

About 200 Kiss fans protested Saturday in front of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum to demand that the band be inducted into the hall.

Fans, some from as far away as California, carried signs and had painted their faces in black-and-white to resemble Kiss band members.

Those participating in the half-hour demonstration were upset that the band, formed more than 30 years ago, has not been admitted, even though it has been eligible since the late 1990s.

Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record, according to the museum's Web site.

"Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll," the site says.

A museum spokesman said it was the first demonstration by fans seeking to have a group inducted.

The foundation that selects inductees is based in New York City, not at the museum.

I'm not saying that KISS ever did anything to change the face of rock n' roll per se, but I do believe that deserve a place in the HOF. They were iconic faces of a generation, inspiring countless hard rock bands of the 80s and hell, Gene and Paul's longevity has been, if nothing else, miraculous. I love KISS, and I love their campiness. Not to mention that their albums (Love Gun, Destroyer & Alive) are pretty much going standards for fans of "hard rock" of the 70s.

Agreed. They influenced many, many bands and put on an incredible show. Their work from the 70's is great stuff.

On the the other hand, the Rock and Roll HOF is for the most part pretty lame and tame by most people's standards. I mean, they'll never have a Slayer exhibit...

I was in Cleveland a few years back and went to see it. In their gift shop I noticed that they had a BROKEN Kiss transistor FM radio, just like the one I had in my youth...only this one cost $90 bucks. (!)

I bought the first one.

That was the last one I bought. They are too intellectual for me.

the problem with all hall of fames is that there're always inductees that don't deserve a place anywhere near that particular hall of fame, so then fans of singers or groups that are arguably better than the weakest inductees go mental at the idea of their favorite (or one of their favorites ) not being in as well.

the huge problem with a music hall of fame is that it's all subjective. no qualitative statistics exist to measure "influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll." and with the voters being mainly curmudgeons, this type of exclusion is bound to become an even bigger ordeal over the next 5-10 years.

i don't really know enough about kiss to make an argument for or against their inclusion in the rock and roll hall of fame, but i think their music is pure cheese and maybe they should start pushing for induction based on their influence on merchandising.

Kiss suck as much as the next crappy band.

But yeah, they're pretty legendary. They belong in there simply for "I want to rock and roll all night and party every day."

Their influence on rock culture merits their inclusion. Some of the stupidest songs of all time, but the influence was still there.

They won't get voted in until older Hall voters have passed away. There are many older critics, industry people, other musicians who despise Kiss.

yeah, it'll probably take about 2 episodes of Gene's reality show to cement that ban for life.

he didn't invent it, he just spawned it when he was having sex with the football hall of fame.

This is spot on. There are voters in there that have repeatedly said "as long as I'm alive, they're not getting in."

It's ridiculous. They have more gold records than any other American band except for Aerosmith, and they are only 1 behind them.

I will never go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame while they are not in it. I'm confident they will get in eventually.

a museum full of rnr memorabilia is cool. the concept of a rnr hall of fame is so not rnr, therefore lame.

their noninduction may make kiss the coolest band ever.

This is on par with Jethro Tull getting the Grammy for metal that one year.

How can you be arguing about Kiss when there are poor people slaving away for minimum wage??????????

BTW, The Dictators rendered Kiss irrelevant from the outset.
