the only music i refuse to buy is by people that i don't personally like. for instance, i will never buy anything by robert pollard because i think he's a dick. (and i also think his music's awful.) the same goes for don caballero because of damon che, but i actually do kinda like don cab's music, so that's unfortunate.
Why would you care what kind of person the person making the music you listen to is? Most of these people are egomaniacs to some degree - you may just not know it or see it because they keep it well hidden. Listen to Don Caballero because you like the music, not because you think Damon Che is a swell dude. They're not your friends - they're providing you a product, and if you like said product, then all is good. If they happen to be good people on top of that, awesome, but if not, so what? What difference in the world should that make to you? You're only cheating yourself.
I agree with this for the most part although I refuse to even listen to the new Don Cab. That has more to with the fact that to me, it isn't really Don Cab without Ian Williams.
Also, on the not buying dead artists thing, that doesn't seem very well thought out. If no one ever buys anything by dead artists, then record labels have no reason to keep them in print or even to have transfered them to a digital format to begin with. If everyone stopped buying Nick Drake albums after he died, then the only way you'd ever be able to hear him now is if you were albe to track down an old vinyl copy of one of his albums. You wouldn't even have the option of downloading a digital, nicely remastered track because the record label that owns the work would never have had the incentive to make one. There's the slim possibilty that such music could be kept available and up-to-date in format purely by enthusiasts, but those of us who follow obscure bands with frequently OOP discographies know how problematic that is.
In addition, I always kind of consider my dollar to be a vote of sorts. I buy things that I like, hopefully from businesses that I don't mind supporting on level, as a way of trying to keep such things available. Again, if no one buys them, they become harder to find.
