Wow, you can't even get on a plane with anything liquid (including drinks, cologne, and suntan lotion).

Apparently, the airport here is already backed up two hours...

I know man. I can't remember not getting on a plane without a beverage.

This plot out of Britain is nuts though.

Here's the scoop UK-side, as quoted from my employer's travel organization:

Quote:
London Heathrow airport is now closed to all incoming flights that are not already in the air until further notice. Passengers due to travel today have been advised not to travel today unless absolutely necessary.

In addition, several airlines are cancelling flights, including British Airways, Lufthansa, Iberia, Air France and KLM until 3pm GMT today

As a result motorways leading to airports are experiencing delays.

All cabin baggage must be processed as hold baggage and carried in the hold of passenger aircraft departing UK airports.

Passengers may take through the airport security search point, in a single (ideally transparent) plastic carrier bag, only the following items. Nothing may be carried in pockets:

- pocketsize wallets and pocket size purses plus contents (for example money, credit cards, identity cards etc. (not handbags));
travel documents essential for the journey (for example passports and travel tickets);
- prescription medicines and medical items sufficient and essential for the flight (e.g. diabetic kit), except in liquid form unless verified as authentic.
- spectacles and sunglasses, without cases.
- contact lens holders, without bottles of solution.
- for those travelling with an infant: baby food, milk (the contents of each bottle must be tasted by the accompanying passenger) and sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight (nappies, wipes, creams and nappy disposal bags).
- female sanitary items sufficient and essential for the flight, if unboxed (e.g. tampons, pads, towels and wipes).
tissues (unboxed) and/or handkerchiefs
keys (but no electrical key fobs)

All passengers must be hand searched, and their footwear and all the items they are carrying must be x-ray screened.

In addition to the above, all passengers boarding flights to the USA and all the items they are carrying, including those acquired after the central screening point, must be subjected to secondary search at the boarding gate. Any liquids discovered must be removed from the passenger.

Terminal stores (on the passenger side of the security points) are going to make a fucking mint on books and travel accesories alone.

If only Bush had the balls of say Harry Truman or Cobra Commander, we would pepper Mecca and Medina with leaflets and over the air warnings to get out in the next 48 hours because we are going to nuke one of the two; then we broadcast an explosion of a nuke out on one of those islands and say, "We were just fucking around this time, but seriously kids--this shit is over. Oil is now $20 a barrel. If you dont like it, we start turning your cities into glass tops for our coffee tables. That is all."

That approach would work with the specific countries but it would embiggen wackazoidal leaders of places like North Korea to do Very Bad Things, because they're crazy.

Also, the loss of subsequent support from all other Arab nations would be massive. We'd have to be prepared to be hated by several dozen more nations to a degree never seen. The Anti-American fomentation resultant would enable extremists to become leaders all over the planet.

So, short-term problem solved, long-term problem not at all solved.

There are 2 reasons North Korea is allowed to operate like it does, and both are economic, and they are called South Korea and China, neither of which want to absorb what amounts to 4 million retarded people from the stone age.

And about the other Arab countries, it's not like they really help us. They take our money for their oil and funnel it to the terrorists. I say we just gom OPeration Linebacker on Tehran for the fuck of it. It's not like it would make the situation much worse.

Hey, remember a few months ago when British intelligence agencies foiled a plot to explode a chemical 'dirty' bomb which would have caused untold fatalities...only the bomb didn't exist and was a complete figment of their imagination?

BBC News - Considerable detail has already been released and it's still the first day of the operation.
We have been told:

* Liquid explosives were planned to be hidden in soft drinks bottles (hence the ban on liquids).
* The explosives would be detonated over the atlantic (to ensure maximum fatalities).
* The attack would come in waves. As things start to clam down after the first wave, another wave was to be launched.
* The deah toll would be greather than 9/11.

According to US spokespeople:

* The investigation has been "critical" for about 2 weeks.

Compared to the vague information you hear from US alerts, this seems *much* more credible.

You may have missed your calling in life as a pre-9/11 intelligence agent.

My point being if we ever nuke another nation we'd better be prepared to assume the role of Top Cop for a very long-time. We'd need to be the dominant force in the world at all times in order to stay safe. If that's what people want for their country, fine. I don't.

I'd rather be a bit more strategic and covert and not have the official mantle of World Boss. We play that role now, but with assistance from other countries. If we were to nuke another country we'd need to be the Boss of the allies as well, I think, because it would be the only way of guaranteeing true support.

That's a lot harder than picking and choosing what our objectives are.

I hope you're being sarcastic.

If not, let people in NYC worry about terror alerts. Somehow I just don't see how someone who lives in Kalamazoo would even care.

Actually what we've been told is

* The plan revolved around liquids of some kind.
* The attack is thought to have involved a series of attacks.

As for detonating explosives over the atlantic to ensure maximium casualties well I'm sorry, bullshit, you explode a bomb 800 feet over Heathrow and you get the same number of dead people and as for the death toll being bigger than 9/11 that is pure speculation and since they have said the attacks would have been onboard 10 aircraft is assuming all 10 aircraft would have been carrying almost 300 passangers each - which is posssible but unlikely.
