shorts and a t-shirt work just fine.

normal shorts + long ride = sore taint.

you know, i've gone on two long rides in the past month and have worn my bike pants (dirty, almost holey, rolled up legs, etc.) with american apparel underwear (full of weird seams that are cute, but not practical). at about mile 15, my girly bits start to rebel. sitting on the seat hurts, shit's just moved around and uncomfortable, and i regret not wearing proper biking gear. i need to invest in bike undies and shorts or pants, i guess, for those long rides.

i don't think girls have a taint.

red, invest in a good pair of skins.... Sugoi sells them. And if you're not used to long rides and your girly bits hurting (it happens), put some chamois butter in the skins. It definitely helps.

I only ride about 9 miles a day, but it does make me laugh when I see some person riding the same bike path as me in biker gear, but travelling half the speed I am.
I'm by no means fast. I'm down to the average time it should take me if I don't encounter a massive traffic jam near the end of my ride. Most of the people I really see hauling ass on their bikes are wearing a t-shirt and basketball shorts.

Of course you've considered that they've ridden 12 times as far?

My bad, they're not called skins, but rather liners. Basically they are padded underwear you can wear under regular clothes.

Here's a link to chamois butter:

http://circlecitybicycles.com/cbutter.htm

I also have (and pardon the pun here) some Assos cream, which is better than chamois butter in my opinion. A bit more "tingly."

and yes, Finch, those are my legs.

This is why the internet is awesome. Dana, I would've never talked about my sore ass otherwise and therefore would've never known of solutions to that problem. You continue to rock my world.

I have, and I have also considered that there is only two miles of this bike path further past my apartment and I ride the rest of the path until I get downtown.
I have people that lap me like I'm stopped and then there are the people I commented about. I respect these people for getting on a bike an bettering their physical conditioning level. Without insulting their physical appearance, I'll just say they have a litte further to go before they are riding at normal speed.

oh, was that a legitimate question? maybe you're not using the correct gears. (i think one of the reasons why red sometimes doesn't achieve her full potential on the bike is that she doesn't take advantage of her gear-shifters as much as she should. i didn't used to either.)

niggawhat?

leave me out of this.

actually, when i did my first tri, my partner yelled out, "switch up!" or "switch down!" when i needed to switch gears during the bike leg. i'm just saying... a real friend/coach would yell at me.

I hate to say it, red, but it's true. I had the same problem for a long time (shifting, that is). I didn't like hearing it either. ;)

oh c'mon. ;)
seriously tho, the people who are passing you, are they riding geared or fixed bikes? most fixed bikes are at a lower ratio in terms of gear inches so the top speed is down a bit, but on climbs you pass almost everyone, especially geared bikes b/c those folks tend to gear down and pedal more but move less.

i have a 21-speed hybrid and i do switch gears. people who pass me going up the bridge have gear bikes too but seem to pass me and pedal almost effortlessly (on mostly road bikes, though some hybrids... i always pass the mtn bikes). maybe its because i'm a fatty and/or i don't have a cool tattoo on my calf?
