I thought some of you Phillie and NYC obners could help me with this. I'm taking my girlfriend to meet my folks in Phillie from the 19-25. She's never been to NYC or Phillie so I would like some input as to what you think she needs to see being a newbie to both cities. We are going to stay in Phillie but take the train into NYC a few times. So give me some ideas on places to eat, things to do, see ect. Plus if you have the heads up on any choice shows that would be great. Fire away...

Dunno about shows, but if you're looking for good bars, here are some that I can recommend:

East Village/LES
Ace Bar (531 E 5th St b/w Aves. A & B) - good jukebox, darts, skeeball
DBA (41 1st Ave @ 3rd St.) - good beer list, beer garden
The Hanger (217 E Third St b/w B & C)
Pink Pony (176 Ludlow St.)

Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn
Floyd (131 Atlantic Ave.) - indoor bocce court, good jukebox
Magnetic Field (97 Atlantic Ave.) - good jukebox
Trout (269 Pacific St.) - beer garden

Park Slope, Brooklyn
Union Hall (702 Union St @ 5th Ave.) - indoor bocce courts, good jukebox
The Gate (321 5th Ave b/w 3rd and 4th Sts.) - darts, good beer
Buttermilk (577 5th Ave @ 16th St.) - pretty cheap, funny specials, good music

Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Union Pool (484 Union Ave) - cheap-ish, good outdoor area
Barcade (388 Union Ave) - exactly what it sounds like. Class arcade games for a quarter, good beer.

good link for upcoming shows. some listings say no shows listed, but i would just go to the venue's site if it says that:

what neighborhood is The Library in? both times I've been to NYC i ended up there and i loved it. fantastic jukebox. and cheap Rheingold, which I suspect is a redundancy.

That's not bias. Ain't nothing to do above that except UCB. I'm looking at you, Chelsea.

its in the east village, right north of houston.

i'll add whiskey ward to the mix. great jukebox, free peanuts, good whiskeys (apparently), pool table and close to the other digs in the lower east side.

you really shouldn't have to ask what there is to do in NYC, but what you should skip.

I for one am a huge proponent of the museums there, esp. the natural hitory, the Whitney, and MoMA.

seeing shows is usually a pretty low priority of mine when I'm in the city. Seriously, it's one of the greatest cities in the world. Bands travel.

as far as Philly (no ie), there's a few threads around here, i think. I can't think of any must see shows in the area between those dates, especially since that festival got shut down (thanks, you stupid gutter punks). Are you gonna be staying downtown? Let me know and I can throw a few things together. You really can't go wrong with the Art Museum, though. Even without the Rocky statue.

ok as cheesy and touristy as this sounds, hop on the ferry going to stanton island (it's free) an hour or two before the sunset. it's such a beautiful view seeing the statue of liberty while the sun is setting. i did that on my last day in ny when i went out there for cmj last year and it was awesome.

(hey i needed to do at least one cheesy thing).

but yes, check out museums in ny. especially moma. bars & shows will always be around.

and the shopping is FANTASTIC in ny. so your gf will definitely dig that.

if you can score tickets to hear the philadelphia symphony orchestra, do it. saw them this weekend and it was mind boggling perfection. they definitely kicked the boston symphony's ass.

nyc: if you're the early morning type take a walk across the brooklyn bridge.

The ferry to Stanton Island sounds cool. She wants to get some good views of the city so that and the Empire State Building would probably work. She works at a dog kennel and animal rescue so she's a big animal lover. Do you guys know if the zoo is a worthwhile endeavour? Also, how about some places to eat. Italian, Greek, or Thai would work. Thanks for all of your suggestions by the way.

GAH!!! and not so much of even a notice!!??? Frankly, I'm a little insulted. Did you see them at the Mann? That remains my favorite outdoor venue I've ever been to. and it's free! free! free!

and jacketweather, give me some time and I'll send you a PM.

for the best thai in nyc, i recommend pongsri down on the corner of baxter & bayard in chinatown. it kicks much ass.
for some of the best pizza in nyc, come over to bkyln and hit grimaldi's, on old fulton st, just down by the waterfront. then hit the ny ice cream factory place just down the street on the dock for dessert, if there's still room. also, jacques torres has his chocolate shop in dumbo down on water street. highly, highly recommended.
the bklyn bridge park is beautiful as well, & it's right there.

edit: you could actually combine all of that with a walk over the bridge, but for god's sake, stay out of the bike lane! hahaha.
