** EDIT**

ALBUM OF THE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

I spent a lot of time with Mastodon's new album "Blood Mountain" over the past weekend, and I've gotta say that it's one of the best Metal albums I've ever heard. These guys have really pushed into a more prog influenced sound, but the ferocity is still there. The playing on it is next level.

I've posted a new track for everyone to check out:

http://dalen.wordpress.com/2006/08/16/mastodon-capillarian-crest/

I can't wait to hear what fans think of the new album. Check it out and see what you think.

Oh, the album is due out on September 12th.

Ok, at tune a day it says you have some 150+ plays of this. You, sir, are a conundrum.
How can one so into ambient play a metal disc over 150 times in a weekend. It boggles the mind. I for one have never been much on metal, and have a wife/hell-life--- that does not go well with metal, so I need some explaination here. all I can say is
rawk on South Fla

i'm into moods. sometimes i want dark and evil, other times i want serenity.

this was a dark and evil weekend.

my wife isn't a fan of heavy music actually (minus Slayer 'cause of their obvious punk influences). she was away most of the weekend, and i was priming for Ozzfest. luckily i had this gem to let soak in.

living, as I am, in the musical equivalent of the crossroads of the mosquito coast and the road on which Natalie Holloway was last seen with the Dane; I am still regularly listening to The Paddingtons and some of the stuff most Obners have forgotten since the Christmas Visa bill arrived.
It's part of the trade-off, I suppose.

There are a number of serious metal heads here on the island, actually. We have several graffitied walls down in town and one that makes me smile most is that which features work by some one who actually cut a stencil of "Metallica" and the "rock fingers" and has sprayed it on several walls. Nice. An anal retentive Belizean island kid rocker!

it is pretty excellent. but it's sort of like most celtic frost records (that i've heard at least)...in that it is above average, but not something you are going to remember that long

contradiction: the label released promos, but most people have been all hush hush. the files that are floating are 128, and the label has demanded that those that have promos don't rip at a higher bit rate, so they're not being traded much. smart move by the label IMO.

shiv: the new Celtic Frost is surprisingly good. much more doomy than i expected, but it has me even more stoked to see them on their tour coming up.

i liked the previous mastadon album because it seemed to be packed pretty tightly. i prefer metal (even the indie/instrametal/stuff) to be in 3-4 minute bursts rather than 12 minute jams. does "porg" here mean the songs on Blood Mountain are taking a longer time to exhaust their ideas?

not at all. every song is still in the 3-4 min. range (minus 1 track).

I was afraid that's where they were headed, but I'll still buy the album when it comes out.

hmmmm...

I'm not sure about this. I just can't get past the drum fills at the end of every bar.

We should do a "porg" thread and list bands we think fit the criteria of "porn prog." There must be some.

i got that feeling from maybe one of the tunes [we all know the one, and i cant think of the name].
their show last friday night was alternately amazing and awful. the band was pretty damn good [felt like they were a little sloppy at times], but the soundguy at webster hall mustve been eating urinal cakes soaked in kerosene because that guy hasnt the slightest idea of how to do live sound. it was one of the worst butcher jobs i have ever heard.
i'm not saying i could do better, but show me where the channels for the gtrs are so i can at least make them audible to the people in the audience.

For those who bought this--is the extra disc (DVD making of, vids, pics) worthwhile? I doubt I'd watch it more than once, but I do like the band.
