'City Slickers' actor Bruno Kirby dies

By JEREMIAH MARQUEZ, Associated Press Writer 1 minute ago

Bruno Kirby, a veteran character actor who costarred in "When Harry Met Sally," "City Slickers" and many other films, has died at age 57, his wife said Tuesday.

Kirby died Monday in Los Angeles from complications related to leukemia, according to a statement from his wife, Lynn Sellers. He had recently been diagnosed with the disease.

"We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from Bruno's fans and colleagues who have admired and respected his work over the past 30 years," his wife said. "Bruno's spirit will continue to live on not only in his rich body of film and television work but also through the lives of individuals he has touched throughout his life."

Kirby was perhaps best known for his roles opposite Billy Crystal in 1989's "When Harry Met Sally" and 1991's "City Slickers."

Other film credits included "Good Morning, Vietnam," "The Godfather: Part II" and "Donnie Brasco." More recently, he played Phil Rubenstein on the HBO series "Entourage."

That's sad. I always loved watching him.

"You made a woman meow?"

"Baby fish mouth!"

Chick flick or not, When Harry Met Sally is one of my favorite movies of all time, and he's nearly as big a reason why as the two main actors/characters.

Lieutenant Steven Hauk: Furthermore, you are to stick to playing normal modes of music, not weird stuff. Those who we'd find acceptable here would include Lawrence Welk, Jim Nabors, Mantovani...

Adrian Cronauer: ...Percy Faith...

Lieutenant Steven Hauk: Percy Faith... good!... Andy Williams, Perry Como, and certain ballads by Mr. Frank Sinatra.

Adrian Cronauer: Would Bob Dylan be outta line?

Lieutenant Steven Hauk: Waaaay outta line

Shame!

I always think of him as the chauffeur in Spinal Tap, although a lot of his scenes got cut from the original edit.

Seemed like a likeable guy.

Me, too!!! I even invoked his "Fuckin' Limey" scene when wishing petecockroach a Happy Birthday mere days ago. Honestly, this may be the single most tragic celebrity death in years.

Damn shame,
Good actor.
And a good guy too, apparently.

I always felt his performance in "Basketball Diaries" was criminally overlooked (as with the film). When you think of supporting actors making differences in film, he was an actor who walked that line. Unfortunately, most of his career he was typecast as a wiseass, which isn't bad when it puts food on the table. He'll be missed.

I just saw this over on the USA Today site, & was fairly shocked.

"When Harry Met Sally" might be the last great romantic comedy Hollywood ever produces.

I also recall Bruno's role in the "Cop On The Edge" skits they did during Letterman's early days at CBS. Good stuff.

RIP.

It's the last non-shitty example of the genre I can remember, at least. Usually I can't even make it thru the commercials for those crapfests.
