i wouldn't put robert pollard and frank black in the same level of output because 90% of what pollard puts out is trash and only 40-50% of frank black's music should be kept to himself.

yeah, I'd agree that it's important to always consider quality while gawking at quantity.

I get a little suspicious when I meet musicians who are all: "Yeah, I write, like, 50 songs a month...". Yes, some people have a crazy output... but c'mon... how special could each of those songs really be? It also tips me off to the fact that they maybe don't get it...

Even Prince has some duds.

Same here, though every time I say it to my wife, she says, Don't 'dude' me!"

Thanks dude.

I actually do call my friends "dude" but kind of ironically.
Don't think I'd be down with my man calling me dude though... it would make me feel like we were "just friends"... which would be sad. :(

Uh... not really. Can't say I'm really down with most of the music that comes out of here. Feist yes. Gentleman Reg yes. Do Make... yes. Raising the Fawn yes. And Apostle of Hustle. And... not sure who else.

People here truly are into electro-synth "performance" joke bands. Me no likey. Go into theatre! Not music. (um. )

It's like for a lot of people here "starting a band" is a way to be social and part of something... rather than an actual interest in music.

So I still find I'm more inspired by the peeps I know from Mtl.

But for me personally it's been more creative here. :)

Thrillhouse, Toronto can be a lot of fun. I think it's a great city.

Yeah, Polly, I guess you're right. I can't think of many bands from Toronto that I like, beyond the Do Makes. Every town is allowed at least one joke synth-pop band - Montreal's World Provider, Milwaukee's Juiceboxxx, and Dallas' Best Fwends I can hang with - but I know what you mean. Or do I? I've gone dancing to house music at Daome every Tuesday for the last 3 weeks.

Above comments aside: yes.

I really do like it here. It's true that's it's less wild and crazy than Montreal, but part of me enjoys that.

Where do you live now?

I find that if you have a decent job, the quality of life here is pretty good:
- lots of green space
- no smoking in bars
- crazy recycling/organics collection
- lots of healthy/veggie restaurants
- great public transit system

It is true that's it's quite a "working" city. There's quite a strong "Protestant work ethic" here. But then again that's all up to you right? I happen to have found a part-time job that I can live off and a job that doesn't expect over-time, etc. So I'm still living my lazy life.

PM me if you want... I'd be happy to give more info.
:)

If you seriously think 90% of Pollard's music is "trash," you aren't really listening.

I don't think he's "best evs" because no one person is, but I think he's seriously talented and among the best. The guy has an amazing ear for melody and a great mind for off-kilter lyrics, and has a pretty damned solid track record. I can think of no one else who has written songs for as long as he has, as many as he has, and turned out as many STRONG songs as he has. If you're one of "those people" who can seriously write off such an incredible amount of strong song writing, why would I even bother reasoning with you?
