...but now i'm starting to get worried about this fucking ring in front of me. It looks a lot bigger than it did when I was putting it together. How large is tacky large? I might've bitten off more than I can chew here.

just encourage your girl to eat more, to decrease the relative size of the ring.

If you can afford it, go for it I'd say. I bought a ring that was in my wheelhouse, and even though she's not the type, if she so chooses later on, we can upgrade when we're financially able.

Two .75 carat diamonds?
My girl got a .6 carat and it looks huge on her tiny fingers. It also feels big when she "accidently" scratches me with it.

now you're thinkin!

i guess I can afford it (probably not, but the diamonds were heirlooms, which cut down the cost in a big way), but i'm also no one who usually supports this sort of thing.

The question is--does she go for these things? Also, I think the hand size is a valid point. Last thing you (and her) want is for to look like an F-14 is landing on her finger.

I have no idea. she doesn't have man hands or anything, but they're not tiny, either.

this is gonna be a long 2 days.

So, was she not a part of your decision making process? I mean, is this a complete surprise? Just curious.

An ex of mine used to give me a lot of jewelry (despite me being a minimalist in terms of jewelry) and 9 times out of 10 I found it tacky (he just didn't seem to get my "style").

Regarding the large stones, is the setting very tall? I know, for me, I'm a tad clumsy as I walk around in a great speed all the time knocking my hands about on walls and corners and so I wonder if girls with those giant rings have problems with knocking their ring about.

For me...an excessively expensive ring just wouldn't work for my lifestyle...but I don't know your lady so I'm just giving my random thoughts on subject.

well, it's not a complete surprise to her (I mean we have been together for 5 years, and someone might have tipped her off)), but to the best of my knowledge she has no idea it's coming. I've got an elaborate plan set up for thursday which invoves me proposing in an orchard, impromptu champagne in a nearby state park (chase's idea. way to suggest more booze, buddy), and a small surprise party for her that night. It's possible that her head might explode off her shoulders.

she does like shiny, flashy stuff, but Usually it's not real, so I don't really know how to gauge that.

Holy crap - TWO?! Yeah, that's big, paired with a sapphire. I mean, if she REALLY likes bling, she's got serious bling. Can you post a picture? Maybe it's not as big in reality as it sounds, but I'm picturing two stones that would normally be the main stone in an engagement ring (I believe .75ct is what my wife's diamond is, and it's pretty big) and then an additional gem. Personally, it sounds like too much, but if this is her style, then don't worry.

I think men tend to think bigger is better.. lol I was lucky my ex had very small fingers, .5 ct looked huge so I was able to worry about the 3Cs when I bought it (poor in grad school).

Dont worry women have a way of making you know when they dont like something..

but more importantly, congrats

I'll put out a good what-what for getting dem heirloom diamonds -- makes you look sentimental and not-chintzy. My whole she-bang is just under 2 carats of diamonds (4 total)

(And you lucky you mentioned heirlooms, cos I was gonna call them jack boys ;) )

It's really nice looking. I still don't feel like i really have a feel for its actual size (despite the ingenious dime trick).

That's what, a 2-carat sapphire?

I wasn't calling you cjintzy. That's the best thing about heirloom diamonds. They are BIGGER THAN YOU CAN AFFORD.
