Chris Stamey-It's Alright

Great poppy album from former db'er. His second solo record. Don't even know if this is even in print anymore. Was listening to it this afternoon and it has distinguished itself as one of the finer pop records of the late 80s. Kinda reminds me of a more fun to be around Westerberg.

Add any unrecognized pop albums you think might be fitting as well.

i've been really diggin some of the old Bristol scene stuff lately/again. Brilliant Corners, The Flatmates, Felt, Denim, The Primitives... All of them hold up remarkably well to my ears.

I know that Jellyfish is 'recognized', especially around here, but back-to-back "Glutton of Sympathy" and "Ghost At Number One" off Spilt Milk might be the two best pop songs ever.

That Graham Cousens disc on Spade Kitty is really good. I've mentioned him before, though.

I saw Chris Stamey at Rams Head in Annapolis about a year ago, he opened for Steve Poltz. I wasn't that familiar with him, the dBs or much else, but I will say that he played a badass cover of Television's "Venus de Milo". It even took me a minute to realize what song it was.

that's how I was listening to it. Production didn't bother me. In fact, I didn't even notice it. I'm actually kind of surprised this was released on a major to be honest.

So, here are my first thoughts:

Cast- All Change
Image
Debut from former La's bassist John Powers' band. Just great straight-up BritPop.

Gene Clark - Echoes
Image
Um... it's mothafukkin Gene Clark. And it's his best album.

Velvet Crush - Teenage Symphonies To God
Image
Very simply, one of the best pop albums of the rock era, IMO.

The Chris Stamey posts got me thinking about how great Don Dixon's Most Of The Girls Like To Dance But Only Some Of The Boys Do is.

Dixon may be better known as a producer, but that's a gem of a record, even if my cassette of it broke a decade ago and I've haven't got it replaced yet.

I gotta search around for it and get it.

The Flatmates

That's a band I don't hear mentioned very often. They put out some good pop tunes, but they were pretty inconsistent (at least of the stuff I've heard of theirs). However, I've loved "I Could Be In Heaven" since it came out.

Since I love Felt/Denim, I think I'll need to check out the others.

How about some Game Theory?

Especially "Erica's Word"

Erica's news, singing the praise and playing the blues

Damn. Now there's a blast from the past.

8th/9th grade "Pure" got massive amounts of spins due mostly to the song "All the way down".

I've got the CD that has both albums on it - Gawddamn, that's good stuff. I think I'll take it to work with me tonite.

My pick for this thread - TSAR's debut album.

You can get it for a penny at Amazon, for Chrissakes.

I think the Cavedogs and Greenberry Woods both put out only 2 full-length releases. Now that's a shame.
