As promised this past April, popular and influential 90s "alternative rock" act Smashing Pumpkins have entered the studio to begin on their first new album since 2000.

To date, only Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin are confirmed for the project; former Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur has not indicated any participation. According to the band, they have enlisted legendary producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, The Cars, The Darkness),

The slow trickle information began more than a year ago when frontman and primary songwriter/musician Billy Corgan announced the reunion.

Since when does a singer and drummer doing an album constitute a reunion?

wasn't this Zwan anyway? Let this be known that in the next I'd say 5 years we're going to be seeing a bunch of old alternarock bands "reforming". Hell, look at Alice In Chains. I could see Soundgarden getting back together at some point if Matt Cameron's PJ dayjob allows time.

Not a reunion, but Townsend and Daltrey are the surviving Who, and Pete, as we speak, is putting together material for a new Who album.

Yeah if it's just going to be Bolly w/Jimmy, I don't see how it'll be any better than TheFutureEmbrace.

not defending this by any stretch, but if people are going to get on bands for reuniting with only two original members, maybe they should check out the ny dolls.

Um, since Corgan decide to start the band in the first place and only take on "members" insofar as he need other bodies on stage to play the parts he writes and plays in the studio.

Not "putting together" - it's done. The "preview" EP is already out. And the album, Who 2 is coming out Oct. 24. (Don't bother buying the EP - everything on it is going to be on the album. And most of it sounds quite good, surprisingly!)
