I have an Associates mix that no one else will like on my computer RIGHT NOW but I can't upload it from home. I'll burn it and take it over to the university next week.

I may also do an early Simple Minds one (when they were Post-Punk rather than Post-Good).

THERE'S SOMETHING STRANGE HAPPENING
The odd pop ascent of The Associates 1979-1982

Image

I'll post a more detailed history of The Associates on Hip-D when I'm actually able to upload this but essentially this mix could be split into three sections.

The first third is strangely backward looking for a Post-Punk group, harking back to the mid seventies era of Roxy Music, Sparks and particularily David Bowie.

The middle section is almost akin to The Beatles psychedelic period, with heavy drug use and studio experimentation producing some very odd music indeed.

The last section is The Associates at the height of their popularity, scoring several high charting singles and a successful album in 'Sulk'.

I'll upload the mix just as soon as I have access to a broadband connection.

Track Listing:

1. Boys Keep Swinging Bowie cover version. Independantly released debut single, Oct. 79
2. The Affectionate Punch Promotional 7" single for album of same name, Aug. 80
3. You Were Young B-side of 'T.A.P' single
4. Amused As Always Album track from debut album 'The Affectionate Punch
5. Would I Bounce Back? Another album track from first album
6. Tell Me Easter's On Friday First of 5 singles released on the Situation2 label during 1981
7. Q Quarters Second Situation 2 single
8. Kitchen Person Third Situation 2 single
9. An Even Whiter Car B-side to 'Kitchen Person', a heavily remixed, dubby version of 'White Car In Germany released before original track
10. White Car In Germany Last of the Situation 2 singles. Their masterpiece?
11. The Associate Instrumental b-side to 'White Car In Germany
12. Party Fears Two First and biggest hit single, reached no.9 Mar. 82
13. Club Country Second promotional single from album 'Sulk', reached no.13 May 82
14. Bap De La Bap Album track from Top Ten album 'Sulk'
15. Grecian 2000 Another album track from 'Sulk'
16. 18 Carat Love Affair Double A side single with 'Love Hangover', last Top 40 hit
17. Love Hangover Cover of Diana Ross track, no.21 in singles chart Jul.82

OK I think I've finally got this up. If there are any problems they need to be brought to my attention in the next hour or so because I can't upload from home.

I don't think it's going to be your thing but you can always surprise me.

I'm guessing if you do like any of it it will be the middle section - 'Tell Me Easters On Friday' to 'White Car in Germany'.

Last call for a re-upload of the Lowest Of The Low mix. Otherwise I'm going to delete it from my harddrive.

Some of you may know I'm always going on about how 'Simple Minds were really good in the early days'. Now is your chance to tell me I'm talking bollocks.

I've stuck a mix of tracks from their early albums in the mix forum. I've called it 'The First Five' although, whisper it, I didn't actually use anything of the first album and then couldn't be bothered thinking of another title.

Go here if you are interested http://www.obner.org/bb/viewtopic.php?t=24457. If you're not surprised you'll be appalled and both of those options are pretty good.
