I don't know how much news this made in Broward Co., Florida but it seems to be spreading quickly around the internet. The football speech at the end is utterly outlandish behavior.

Does anyone know what they were protesting?

This isn't directed at FR, but this is one of my big probs with the Internet.

This footage is from a Free Trade Area of the Americas Protest in 2003. It's not news now because it's not, well, new.

Also, while I don't condone any behavior by anyone in the video, it has become more and more apparent that people don't understand civil disobedience or taking one for the team. After numerous events in the past 50 years, someone who puts their body in danger for a cause should know what might happen.

That's the whole point. It's like that scene from Ghandi. You make them punish you until they realize how stupid it is. That means the first dozen round of people are going to get a rifle butt to the face or a rubber bullet in the ass.

This woman is very lucky these weren't real bullets a la Kent State--and for the record, I don't believe you can blame the National Guard soldiers nor the students in that tragedy. If you are going to challenge soldiers, you are taking a significant risk of being injured. That's the tradeoff for exposing over-the-top tactics.

The rubber bullets used as a tactic to move people don't bother me as much as the super macho attitude taken afterward. I mean, when they give a speeding ticket do they high five each other?

you bet your ass they do. look, cops are dicks all over the place, not just down here.

I'm not a big fan of cops, because there are plenty of self absorbed toolsheds out there. Feel the same way with teachers. However, in a job where their lives are at risk all day, every day, I would think the pressure builds up pretty damn high inside your brain.

Again, I'm not condoning the speech, but it's a lot like soldiering, i.e. you have to lose some of your humanity in order to not get bogged down by all the horrible things going on around you. Especially in a major metropolitan area chock full of violent crime like Miami.

There's a serious morale cum distraction element here. While I don't think the speech was appropriate, and from my tiny vantage point neither was firing rubber bullets at the protesters, if this had turned into Chicago 1968 or Seattle 1999, the whole event would've be an entirely different animal.
