Okay obnerites.

I've been gone for over a month on vacation & have been in the dark about what's new.

So, what are the newest releases that I should be looking for??
Quick -- give me a quick primer & bring me back into the land of Obner!!

Check for the mix thread too, there's lots to choose from in there.

Fairly recent stuff:

Asobi Seksu - Citrus
- Shoegazey pop with synth flourishes, high-register Japnese cick singer. Nothing totally new, but not overly derivative. Nicely catchy and atmospheric.

Six Organs of Admittance - The Sun Awakens
- Darker psyche folk, more focused than the last 6 Organs album.

Comets on Fire - Avatar
- Going farther in a classic rock direction. Ben Chasny (of 6 Organs) is more integrated into their sound now, and the vocals are more polished.

I almost feel like Chasny takes less of a spotlight on this record. The one token Chasny number per album, "Sour Smoke" here, is far better camouflaged than past additions. "Classic rock" or even classic rock-ward is too underwhelming of a term or direction for "Avatar". It's a skyward infernal.

I have nothing to add but this Drinky-ward argument.

The only record I've really liked in the past couple of months has been the Vetiver album. If I tell you it features Devendra Banhart you'll have some idea of what it sounds like.

'To Find Me Gone' I believe it's called, off the top of my head.

Oh yeah, I like this a lot, but I wouldn't really say it's RIYL Devendra Banhart. His role is very much a supporting one, and you can really only hear him on a couple of tracks. Vetiver's style is much more subtle and subdued, but the songs are just really strong. It's a great summer record.

As for the Comets on Fire thing, I think "classic rock" is a pretty broad term that probably carries more bad connotations than good, but it's just meant as a description of the style. I mean "Sour Smoke" is basically a hybrid between "Immigrant Song" and "Four Sticks". You could make a huge list of '70s rock bands that Avatar evokes, but it transcends derivation and style experiments, I think.

You folks are AWESOME!!

In a few days, I feel like I'm making some headway into what I've missed this last month and a bit.

Can't wait to get my ears on some of your recommendations.

Thanks-a-ton,

Bill
