A lil' update on one of the posts I think I've argued the most over on Obner...

L.A. also opposed to Angels' name change

Associated Press
Posted: 1 hour ago

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - The Angels baseball team is now facing legal opposition from cities on both sides of its new name.

The city of Los Angeles filed a brief Wednesday supporting Anaheim's lawsuit that claims the name Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim violates the team's stadium lease.
L.A. calls it "improper" for the Angels to use the name of a city in which they do not play or pay taxes. The brief says Orange County Superior Court "should reject the Angels' attempt to profit from the Los Angeles name they abandoned long ago."

It's unclear whether L.A.'s brief, which came without any formal authorization from the City Council, would have any relevance in court.

Last week, Los Angeles Dodger owner Frank McCourt said his team opposed the name change but wouldn't support Anaheim in court. Dodgers senior vice president of public affairs Howard Sunkin said Wednesday the team applauded LA's filing.

"This just reiterates that Los Angeles has one team and it's the Dodgers," he said.

The Angels said the name change, announced earlier this month, is intended to increase fans, advertisers and broadcast contract, by emphasizing the team's connection to the nation's second-largest media market.

When founded in 1961, the team was the Los Angeles Angels. It became the California Angels upon moving to Anaheim in 1966 and adopted the Anaheim Angels name in 1997.

As I was driving to work this morning, I saw this "Save the Angels" sign on the marquee @ the Anaheim Convention Center. It made me laugh. I really think they should just stick with their own name. But, whatever.

Yeah, I saw a "City of Angels" billboard the other day... It's pretty infuriating...

Meaningless. The court can ignore it for the case with Anaheim.

Did they tell the Galaxy that too? Or the Lakers, Kings & Rams when they did the same?

GW Forum is in Inglewood = LA = Lakers/Kings paying L.A. property taxes...

The Galaxy play in the Home Depot center which, if I'm not mistaken, is in Hawthorn = LA County...

The LA Rams played in los angeles proper for 1946 until 1979, and played at the Colliseum for over 30 years before they moved to Anaheim....

All of your examples have been established as "LA" teams, and not for a period of 6 years, either. It's not like the Angels haven't been called otherwise for almost 40 years now....Oh, wait. Thay have. None of those other teams were attempting a land/status grab like that devil incarnate Artie Moreno is...

Some people in LA don't wanna root for the Dodgers. Deal with it.

Most people in Orange County and Los Angeles don't agree with the corporatist machismo that comes along with changing their name. I believe most baseball fans/purists see it the same way...

I'm sure it's been said already but I just wish they would go back to the "California Angels." I grew up in LA (county) being an Angel's fan and I've never cared for the Dodgers (although I do not hate them), but the idea of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim or whatever the proposal is seems a bit lame.

Yeah I can't comply with the original request. When the Angels won the World Series I turned to my gf and told her that I could now die with peace of mind.

ahem... a little history lesson:

Long ago, in a land time forgot, there were the Brooklyn Dodgers... and the Los Angeles Angels (AAA minors... Pacific Coast League). Dodgers left NY and came to LA (I remember their first season in the LA Colliseum). My dad always hated the Dodgers...because they replaced the Angels and the O'Malleys displaced hundreds of latino families in Chavez Ravine to build Dodger Stadium.

Saying the Anaheim Angels is like saying the Utah Jazz... I mean jazz belongs in New Orleans ... they shoulda changed the name to the Utah Moronis.

So I am thinking they should give back the name angels... how about the Anaheim Denny's.... or the Anaheim Malls.
