Isn't a comet by definition on fire?

I call shenanigans.

I listened to "Field Recordings" again just now. I think it has awesome moments, particularly the closing "The Black Poodle", but it's less fully realized than "Blue Cathedral", both of which bear the cloak of echo that being restrained on "Avatar" allow it to be an aggressively gorgeous record.

Just downloaded something of theirs called "Bong Voyage". Hit me up.

Let us know what you think of that. Some of the other jammy-type stuff of theirs that I've heard (just the bonus disc for Blue Cathedral actually) isn't really worth the time.

count me in as an avatar disciple. and yes the howling rain record is definitely worth a listne as well. and whoever said that comets are on fire by definition is mistaken.real comets are not on fire. not ever. they are in fact actually very very cold.

Comet's aren't on fire. Pluto's not a planet. Piss on astronomy, I say. Let's go back to the sun revolving around a flat Earth. Those were happy times.

I heard a song of this last week that didn't sound anything like I thought it would, in a good way. I think I'll have to investigate further.

From what I've heard, I prefer the earlier sound. I haven't heard the entire new album, though.

I just bought this yesterday without really knowing if I liked it beforehand, having only heard it once. Three times now, and it's pretty good and looks to only get better.

Wow this is pretty badass. Their drummer is amazing.

When did these guys get so good?

Between this and Espers II, I'm reconsidering my opinion of psych/stoner rock. Someone recommend me some more stuff like this. Even old stuff.

After 8 straight listens to this record, and about 15 overall, I can safely say I don't share the love for this record, or this band.
Here's what bugs me: It's an ugly mess of yelled but buried vocals, overwrought lyrics and sound effects for no other reason than to sound avant-psych. So it's probably not a surprise that the my favorite song on the record is the slimmed-down "Sour Smoke", and my least favorite is "Holy Teeth", which is the song on the record the best sums up what I don't like about COF. The only saving grace of this band is Ben Chasny on guitar. That's why I'd rather hear Six Organs of Admittance on any given day.
I think COF are even worse live; it's even messier and I'd rather watch Mudhoney, who's sound, if COF were stripped down to their essence, COF is ripping off.

Well, that's a well-formed opinion, but one I don't agree with. On "Avatar", the sound effects are curtailed to reveal more intelligible lyrics - if they are overwrought (which I only think you'd get by reading along) they are never gauche. I hear honesty where you hear affectation in their sound. I don't really have the context to accuse them of ripping off Mudhoney or trying to sound avant-psych.

I would love to check on Howlin' Rain if anyone's offering.

How was the Growing/Excepter/Aa show with Comets in Brooklyn yesterday, anybody?

The show was pretty great. I would post some pictures, but they all came out pretty bad, like this one:

I hadn't actually listened to Comets on Fire until a week before the show, and I though I enjoyed Avatar, I wasn't expecting Comets to be blow me away or anything. They made a fan out of me, though.

I skipped out after Comets, so I didn't see Growing or any other bands that might have played after.
