No wonder people wear those cheesehead hats, they're just too drunk to know they look stupid!!

From Forbes:

Special Report
America's Drunkest Cities

David M. Ewalt, 08.22.06, 6:00 PM ET

It will come as no surprise that the residents of a city known as "The Nation's Watering Hole" like to have a beer or two.

But Milwaukee isn't just your average brewing town. It's the hardest-drinking city in America, according to Forbes.com's ranking of America's Drunkest Cities.

To determine the rankings, we started with a list of the largest metropolitan areas in the continental U.S. Thirty-five candidate cities were chosen based on availability of data and geographic diversity.

Each city was ranked in five areas: state laws, number of drinkers, number of heavy drinkers, number of binge drinkers and alcoholism. Each area was assigned a ranking in each category, based on quantitative data, and all five categories were then totaled to produce a final score, which was sorted to produce our rankings. (Click here for the complete methodology.)

Milwaukee ranks high for its drinking habits across the board. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Survey 2004, more than 70% of adult Milwaukeeans reported that they had had at least one alcoholic drink within the past 30 days--the highest percentage on our list. Twenty-two percent of Milwaukee respondents confessed to binge drinking, or having five or more drinks on one occasion--also the highest on our list. And 7.5% of the population were reported as heavy drinkers--adult men that have more than two drinks per day, or adult women who have more than one drink per day.

High percentages of alcohol consumption and abuse can translate into serious trouble for a city, including increased public health costs. (See "Cutting Alcohol's Cost.")

Milwaukee has long had a reputation as a city built on beer. It was once the nation's top beer-producing city, home to four of the world's largest breweries: Schlitz, Pabst, Miller and Blatz. Legendary sitcom characters Laverne and Shirley fixed bottle caps on one of the city's assembly lines. Even the name of the town's baseball team--The Brewers--alludes to its boozy past. Today, Miller Brewing, now a subsidiary of SABMiller, is the only major brewery left in town, but other major corporations call the city home, including Harley-Davidson, Briggs & Stratton and Manpower.

Prominent Milwaukeeans say the city's history gives it a bad rap. "It's just such a stereotype," says "Lips" LaBelle, longtime afternoon DJ on 94.5 FM WKTI. "Milwaukee has so much to offer, and I hate to see it painted in that light. I don't think [alcohol abuse] is any worse here than in any other city." Perhaps the city's wide and varied summer activities are driving up the alcohol numbers, he suggests--Milwaukee is also known as "The City of Festivals."

Or, there could be another explanation. "It's cold here, and we need our brandy," says LaBelle.

Coming in second on our list is another chilly metro: Minneapolis-St. Paul. The twin cities ranked No. 2 for adults who reported having had a drink in the last month, No. 3 for binge drinkers and No. 12 for heavy drinkers.

Rounding out the top five drunkest cities are Columbus, Ohio; Boston; and Austin, Texas.

Curiously, several towns with a reputation for partying and drinking didn't rank very high on the list. You might be able to score a free cocktail in any Las Vegas casino, but overall, the city comes in at only No. 14. New Orleans is home to Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras, but it only ranked in 24th place. And spring-break party spot Miami placed all the way down at No. 33 of 35.

Of course, just because a city ranks high on the list doesn't make it a den of debauchery. A top-drinking town could be populated by grandmas who imbibe a glass of wine every night to keep their heart healthy. And just because someone tips back a few beers doesn't make them irresponsible.

But it's a safe bet that nobody's going thirsty in Milwaukee.

Not technicaly part of "America" ...but my vote goes to: MONTREAL

It is basically a moral imperative there to go out almost every night of week and drink your face off, as well as smoke your lungs black, and stay up till 4am.... and then go to work the next day (if you have a "real" job in the first place.

Right Ish?

The band What Made Milwaukee Famous should add this article to their website.

If America were to ever annex Saskatchewan, there is no doubt in my mind that Saskatoon would make the Top 10 on the strength of DumpJack's nightly liver obliteration alone!

And with Phil moving to Austin, watch for a surge to the top spot next year. Colin put 'em in the Top 5 based solely on his SXSW antics.

I'm a little surprised it beat out Austin or Boston, especially after Texas was named the number one party school. You would think huge college towns with long stretches of bars/clubs would beat out Milwaukee and their Breweries.
Before Lincoln put a ban on birthday drinks to regulate the bar crawl, I would have put us in the running for tops in the under 500,000 population category. I believe we are in the top ten for bars per capita.

no surprise. i'd imagine wisconsin's the drunkest state, per capita as well. every other year there was a protest against the drinking age (they wanted 1 8 ) at my UW, including drunken marches down the street, tipping over newspaper boxes, bending signs, vandalizing cars, marching on the steps of official govt property, et cetera.

there's always beer and bars everywhere. i left my small town in 1989 not to return until 2002, and a lot of things changed my small town and those nearby except for the bars -- all were still there and most under their original names. lushes. (i used to be included in that lush title.)

I saw a piece on this list last night on the local Pittsburgh news- I think Pitt showed up as #8, and maybe #2 in the all- important "binge- drinking" category. Even though my stay is temporary, I'll try to do my part tonight to uphold the local badge of honor.

Yeah, but a lot of the college kids here drink at parties, off-campus apartments, in the dorms, etc. I'm guessing that doesn't make it into their calculations.

as someone who grew up in wisconsin, allow me to further mention that not only is milwaukee a drunk city, wisconsin is quite possibly the drunkest state in the union. no fucking joke, people throw it back there like it's their job. i've lived in boston, and spent time in austin, and they don't even compare to how much drinking goes on in W. It's the culture, and there's very little else to do, and practically nothing that you can't/don't do while drinking.
minneapolis/st paul is also a boozy place, i understand why it comes in at #2.

<===== currently drunk.

Truth be told, I would've thought Las Vegas would've been ranked right up there.

Ha! Me and my 'brothers' here are well known imbibers. For the drunkest CDN cities I've lived in, the 'toon is high up there, but Sudbury was pretty fucking crazy too.

As for annexation, keep in mind that we ranked first in Canada for violent crime and obesity! Lots of drunk fatties stabbing people left and right.

They didn't factor alcohol related arrests in this study, unless it was part of the State law category. That should really be included, especially any sort of public drunkeness/Drunk and disorderly arrests and DUI/DWI statistics.

Of the 4+ million wisconsinites, maybe a tenth of a percent wear the cheeseheads. And that is still probably too many. Just not a style anymore.

I am proud to be a part of that drinking heritage here in Milwaukee.
As far as school drinking. I think UW-Madison is excluded from those college drinking studies. It would rank too far above average to be considered a college anymore.
Seriously. Look at the schools you have in WI for drinking.

UW-Madison. Huge school with large binge crowd.
UW-Milwaukee. Very large school with lots of traveling students who drink.
Marquette. Drink to forget you dont have Dwayne Wade anymore.
UW-Whitewater. One of the top business schools in the country. Nothing to do there but drink. ...inspired the movie Animal House.
UW-Lacrosse .. Smaller school, but big drinkers.
The rest of the UW system, located in smaller cities and towns with nothing to do but drink.

Our winters have been very mild for the past 10 years or so, but even with weather in the 40's alot in winter, you can't exactly play golf on mush. So we drink.

Finally. There are so many more upscale bars and lounges popping up in the state that drinking is not only done for entertainment, it is encouraged.

can't beat house parties with all-you-can-drink-until-all-the-kegs-are-empty at $3 a cup. (of course that was 12 years ago; don't know how inflation has changed this.)
