I know there's a few fans on the board who might be interested in this. This is one band that should get the mix treatment as well. I might take a crack at doing this later.

Mercury Rev Reveal Their Best Along With Bonuses

Mercury Rev have achieved more critical acclaim than blockbuster sales since forming in Buffalo, New York in the late '80s and releasing their 1991 Yerself Is Steam debut LP, but a new compilation will shed light on the band's still evolving legacy.

The Essential Mercury Rev — Stillness Breathes (1991-2006) will be released by V2 on October 3. The first disc in the two-CD set features many of the group's most popular songs, including "The Dark Is Rising," "Goddess On A Hiway" and "Opus 40." While this may entice consumers who want to try dipping their toes into the Mercury Rev pond, it's the second platter that will grab longtime devotees.

Disc two features radio recordings, remixes, rarities and songs originally popularized by The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and David Bowie. It also includes Suicide's Alan Vega helping out on "Deadman."

Mercury Rev have had a somewhat tempestuous career, but have managed to release six albums. Their last effort, The Secret Migration, came out on V2 last year.

Here are the songs on The Essential Mercury Rev — Stillness Breathes (1991-2006):

Disc one:
# "Diamonds"
# "Everlasting Arm"
# "In A Funny Way"
# "Goddess On A Hiway"
# "Chasing A Bee"
# "The Dark Is Rising"
# "Black Forest (Lorelei)"
# "Holes"
# "Carwash Hair"
# "Empire State"
# "Something For Joey"
# "Frittering"
# "A Drop In Time"
# "Opus 40"

Disc two:
# "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier" (1999 Peel Session)
# "I Only Have Eyes For You"
# "Observatory Crest"
# "Streets Of Larado"
# "So There"
# "Afraid"
# "He Was A Friend Of Mine"
# "Delta Sun Bottleneck Stomp" (Chemical Brothers remix)
# "It's A Man's Man's Man's World"
# "Clamor"
# "Seagull"
# "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds"
# "Coney Island Cyclone" (1991 Peel Session)
# "Silver Street"
# "Deadman"
# "Philadelphia" (KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic mix)
# "Good Times Ahead"
# "Memory Of A Free Festival"

The fucking bonus disc that came with my copy of Deserter's Songs is up there with some of the better random shit I have, and probably has gotten more play than anything from me, save "Goddess On A Highway"

I hate when they pair rarities comps with greatest hits. Argh!

They should just put "Chasing a Bee" on there 19 times and spare us the rest of their discography.

Yeah, because not being a fan of certain bands is so out of the ordinary.

So, wait, are you contemptuous of my criticism, or are you insulting me back?

I just got that bonus disc recently. It's great.

Hey DumpJack, if you want to make this mix but don't have that bonus disc/EP (it's all covers), I might could upload it for you and whoever else might want it.

I'd be interested in some of the stuff on the second disc of that comp, but I wouldn't buy it for that.

Definitely upload! I don't have that bonus, so I'd be want to have it. That would obviously make a better mix.

I had already bought the album when I found out about the bonus disc version back in 1999. I found someone to buy the non-bonus copy I already had, but then when I went to the store to get the bonus disc version, it was sold out!
