I know I've often drooled over rparis & dnorwood's pics and stories from the lovely state they inhabit...

And, truth be told, I find myself more and more curious about what it would be like to live there.

Do you guys know of any Oregon specific job sites? I know the employment there is supposed to be slim-pickings... but I can't help but wonder if it's proximity to CA might make it friendly to an educational software design person such as myself...

pls+thx

Do it, polly. We'll help Rodney and Dana make an Obner name for Oregon.

At this point it's just a tiny little thought... just feeling like I might want a change in a year or two and Oregon seem to draw me somehow...

Oh... then you're not so far away, right?

So you really liked growing up on OR? Were you in a major city, e.g. Portland or, my favorite, Eugene? Is it really as nice and laid-back as it seems? :)

i just drove up 101 to portland on friday, and the southern oregon coast is more or less the most remarkable thing ever.

My family took a cross-canada, cross-northern states trip in 1993... we drove down the West coast and made it as far as Northern California... that area where Orgeon meets CA was my favorite part of the trip. I loved the feel of Eugene too.

hey polly... give me a few to do some research for you... there's always http://www.oregonjobs.com/

KGW (local news station) sometimes has links to job postings.
Check out www.wweek.com and www.portlandmercury.com-- in their classifieds section.
Also, www.oregonlive.com (which is an offshoot of the local newspaper the Oregonian).

If you've got specific job requests, I might be able to find more detailed info for you.

Yeah, it's hard to deny the greatness that is Portland... I truly love it here.

Thanks. :)

No need to trouble yourself with more extensive research... just wanted to scope things out a bit...

Out of curiousity, does this love for Oregon also extend to Seattle? (e.g. is it also love for the greater Pacific NW region?)

I'm actually trying to move to Seattle. I've spent a couple of weeks in both winter and summer in Portland and really like it, though. But the job is want is in Seattle, so... But I've never been to Seattle, so I'm curious to hear what people think about it.

I've been to "See Attle". It's not that I didn't like it... it's just part of the draw of a town like, say, Eugene is that it's small and kind of nestled in to the countryside, yet still seems to be hooked in to the rest of the world---i.e. in the country but not cut-off (that was just my impression).

Where as Seattle is a big city. Nothing against it. It's just I find I'm getting more and more tired and less and less impressed by the "big city life".

Seattle is great for a big town in the NW. I just don't dig all the traffic and other related "big city problems" that go along with it. People aren't nearly as friendly there as they are in PDX either. But yeah, it's a wonderful beautiful city with a lot of culture to offer. Portland's the same way, but on a smaller more intimate scale.

I hear you. Right now I think I'm still in big city mode, but I think someday that's going to give. I'll probably still need to work in a big city though. The trick for me will be finding a way to live out in the country, but still feel connected, and have a reasonable way to commute to the city. Not sure how it will happen, but...

Do you find people pretty open-minded in Oregon? i.e. toward various ethnicities, environmentalism, women's issues and, of course "the gays"?

lol, having grown up in the PDX area (and still running home to visit family a few times a year) I actually hate the traffic worse in Portland now than here in Seattle - but of course that is probably because I know what spots to ignore up here in Seattle and traffic patterns have changed since I moved away from there so I just get bogged down when I go back to visit.

On a side note, I think that I've mentioned this before, but why did PDX have to wait until I moved away to become cool?? lol, or is there some sort of correllation ;)~

Nacho, define your statement above for me and I'll be happy to give you some input - our public transportation system here isn't as great as some, but it is still very functional. I live in Issaquah which is about 15 miles East of Seattle - I catch a bus from a Park and Ride and am in downtown in about 20 mins every morning - Issaquah is kind of like a lesser suburb, and still in ways has a small town feel to it....is that what you are looking for? Or are you looking for literal countryside? There are options for you there as well :)

This is a long term, down the road, thing for me. I could see myself wanting to get out of city living in 5-10 years, but the typical suburban life doesn't sound that appealing either. I'd want some place with good scenery and a little more "away from it all," so to speak.

If I move to Seattle this fall, though, I'll most likely live in the city. I don't know too much about Seattle neighborhoods, but it's still a little early to be thinking about that (need to interview first!).

I don't know about Eugene. I would imagine they're open-minded since they have the University there. Portland is pretty much bleeding heart liberal, if that helps clarify. ;)
