Lately I'm in a kind of musical holding pattern... I've got about 12 CDs that I listen to on repeat. I made a list of them today and realized they look quite "adult contemporary"... or maybe "adult alternative" (the weird term they coined on the Canadian music awards for artists like Feist).

Here's my list:

+ Arthur Russell - First Thought Best Thought
+ David Axelrod - The Edge
+ Juana Molina - Son
+ Rufus Wainwright - Want Two
+ Burning Spear - Sounds from the Burning Spear
+ Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown
+ Nine Horses (David Sylvian) - Snow Borne Sorrow
+ David Sylvian - Secrets of the Beehive
+ Sea & Cake - The Fawn
+ Apostle of Hustle - Folkloric Feel
+ Velvet Underground - (various things...)
+ Brokeback - Looks at the Bird
+ Marine Girls

What do you think? Am I still hip?

Definitely Adult Alternative. We'll let your pal frostingspoon explain the meaning of "Adult Contemporary" in U.S. radio terms.

maybe my genre distinctions need updating, but i don't see dub or old downtempo instrumental stuff (i.e. axelrod) as falling anywhere near "adult alternative."

I guess I just see it being a possible symptom of the "world music" tendencies of older people. Heh.

I fail to see a problem with any of the CDs on that sample list

Never care about what your taste "appears like" to others. Others aren't any more-better than you and never will be. You are the sole arbitrator of you. If you like you, to hell with external perceptions.

Hipsterism is ridiculous, always has been, and only serves as a grown-up way to still pick on people on the playground.

Actually, it was with some pride, and much humour that I made that observation about myself.

Kind of like: I've moved into my own (mostly)-non-hipster-dependent zone of music listening. Not that I was ever that concerned with it all to begin with, (read: I was "80's girl" in the 90's). I just found it funny to realize. I'm a geezer. :)

I wasn't aware of "adult alternative" until my mom informed me that they play Feist on the radio station at her work all the time.

Then I went 'oh no'.

I would get much more satisfaction working for a Triple A format than an AC one, that's for sure.
