Nick Southall, whome I highly respect, thinks this will be his album of the year come December.

http://www.stylusmagazine.com/reviews/s ... nd-gil.htm

Quote:
This is the point where I talk about lost master tapes, drug addiction, burning studios, collapsing record labels, gigs with Arthur Lee, and how Shack would be huge if only none of the above had happened (except the Arthur Lee thing—although, thinking about it…), how they’re the best, and I really mean The Best, post-Love, post-Byrds, post-Nick Drake, and post-Beatles band to do that post-Love, post-Byrds, post-Nick Drake, and post-Beatles thing. And now they’ve added post-Miles Davis and Gil Evans to that list...

Thoughts on this brillant album?

plus, that guy mentioned toulouse-lautrec in his walkmen review. what a badass. consider that page bookmarked.

nevermind, that one was derek miller.

actually, all those reviews are pretty money. mike powell on fiery furnaces is also very relatable for me...i never read stylus but i like that stuff.

When these guys are on their game, they are the epitome of sensitive British rock. HMS Fable was an incredible album.

I saw them on that tour in London, and was walking down the stairs to grab a pint between songs when I ducked between (wait for it) Brett Anderson and Noel Gallagher standing in the balcony smoking and chatting with the rest of us like fanboys. Best celeb sighting I had in the UK.

Ah, don't be such a sentimental sap. Waterpistol is a classic, and this new one is pretty great too. Been listening to it a lot for the last week or two, and it does seem as good as ever, and if you know the Head brothers and Shack, then you know that's very good Beatlesy pop like the La's and Stone Roses and all the others, but with more depth, and this time paying some tribute to Miles Davis and Gil Evans as the title suggests, augmented with a brass band and string quartet. Very impressive. And yeah, some silly reviewers are already calling it album of the year. Could be. Who knows after only a week or so. Got the sound of an album with some legs, and it's a very classy sound, like an old friend from first listen, then just gets better. Kinda laidback, so don't expect power pop. Gonna be listening a lot to this one. Not released in the US yet. Don't know if Noel Gallagher's label has distribution here yet. Shame if not, although some say that this is the only worthy act he's got signed. Got mine through cd-wow with one of the many $2 discounts available. $15.95 postpaid. The CD comes in a nice mini-lp gatefold package with a glossy movie credits type poster and lyric sheet on the back. Or in a full size gatefold LP package if you buy the double vinyl. I think they are still streaming it from the Uncut Magazine site at http://www.uncut.co.uk/music/shack/spec ... tures/8750

That sure was an amazing group of people at one point over there ... too bad it's such a skeleton crew now. But I guess we all kind of moved on to other times and other places. Kinda miss it though. We all learned a lot from each other.

i really hate to agree with one as hyperbolic (is that a word?) as BeeOK, but this album really deserves more attention. it's fantastic.

as mentioned in every review, RIYL: love, byrds, nick drake, and the beatles

personally i've just discovered this band (thanks Uncut), and thus discovered the strands and the pale fountains. obsession is sinking in.
