Just finished the mega-music transfer from two external 300 gig hard drives to one 600 gig hard drive. My god that was painful. From here on out, its DVD's to back up anything that wont fit (Im talking to you, Johnny Cash collection, and The Beatles 10-disc BBC thing)

Anyone else have great storage stories to share!!??!!1

Well, you know, I had to open up each hard drive and individually pull off the "data particles" and then glue each one to the new disc (I used Elmer's). I havent tested it yet, but Im pretty sure everythings going to work just fine.

Thanks.

The painful part was because I had the brilliant idea to try and put it all on a network attached storage device which is a fine idea actually, but I have so much music that it took about 4 days to move it all over to this box that plugs into my wireless router. It works fine, but is limited by my wireless speed (which I didnt anticipate) and even the best wireless routers cant touch a good firewire speed. So that, coupled with the fact that this 'box' just spins the drived constantly with no way to 'park' them or shut them off without unplugging it, and there is a heat issue..I just bit the bullet, sold it on ebay (at a profit) and bought a new external HD. The difficulty came in transferring to/from the 'box'. It only would have taken 4 hours or so to move everything from the two old drives to the new one, and if it had all been on my computer alerady it would have been even quicker.

nice, now when the 1 600 GB drive crashes you'll lose everything at once.

Why has this become a thread about avatars?

Should I turn avatars back on?

I imagine you feel the same way, but I know that even though I could replace most of what I have thats important, a full crash/data loss would be devastating. I might quit listening to music altogether.

Every few weeks or so I take 8 or 10 albums I've been listening to off my HD and transfer them to a cd-r as a data file.

If I keep doing this I won't need to buy an external HD methinks. I am dubious that these cd-r's are going to work 20 years from now though...

My collection is now too big to do anything with without a small army of archivists.
