Uhm all regionalism aside, is this a choice?

Detroit would certainly be on the top of the list of choices for my famed "Armpit of America Tour"

Newark, Detroit and Oakland are three must sees, for burnt out husks of cities.

Come to The A. I won't be there, but Yail might be able to call Laryy, and that guarantees a good time.

It's pretty hot here, but there are a lot of good restaurants.

Detroit needs your money more.

Try staying downtown across from the stadiums. I liked it down there. I'm not sure about the night life, because we were at Tiger stadium for a wedding reception, but the walk back to the hotel wasn't too scary.

ATL will have you driving all over the place, but there is probably more to do there.

Come to the A.

If you do I can make some recommendations for some good but cheap (if the company isn't picking up the tab) restaurants and bars to hit up.

As for music, not sure how long he'll be here but here are a couple options during that time:

Sufjan Stevens - Fox Theatre - Wed. 20th - will cost over $35+ probably

The Raconteurs - Tabernacle - Tuesday 19th - $30 face value

The Gossip - Drunken Unicorn - Tuesday 19th - cheap

Ollabelle, Jim White - The Earl - Tuesday 19th

Peelander-Z, Supersystem - The Earl - Thursday 21st - $10-$15

Magnolia Electric, Co. - The Earl - Friday 22nd - $unknown

Braves are on a road trip that week.

Bring it.

Seriously... how is that a tough choice? What the hell is he thinking? Come to Atlanta, and the worst of it is some traffic. Come to Detroit, go home with tetanus and a missing kidney.

I've spent quite a bit of time in both. Only pick Detroit if you hate the hot weather and want something urban and gritty. Detroit's a fun town, but it ain't for everyone. Motown Meseum's a blast and some really fun bars that get pretty wild. Stop by the Majestic if you go.

Like the T-shirts they sell there say...
Detroit: Where the weak are killed and eaten.

Atlanta's way more laid back...brighter and shinier...safer...but too fuckin' hot for me in the summertime. Its a lot better place to go when you're not familiar with the lay of the land as you're more likely to be able to stay in safe areas.

Just go hang out at little 5 points and you'll find somethin' to do. Ignore the junkies.

This is a no-brainer in favor of ATL for every concievable reason, not the least of which is the potential for hi-jinks with Bloor and company.

OK, I hope all you have had some fun lighting the homeles guy on fire and peeing on him to put out the flames.
As a resident of Detroit Jr., I 've got to offer something amounting to a defense. And since his presence here suggests crack is a music fan I'll suggest he look at the itineraries of places such as The Magic Stick, Majestic Theater, Magic Bag, State Theatre, St. Andrews Hall and The Shelter while making a decision on destination.
Seriously, there's lots of fun to be had in Detoit, especially the area along Woodward, the new stadiums, Greektown and the casinos.

And just a few miles north is Royal Oak, which is hipster and professional as fuck but has lots of good restaurants and bars but is small enough to navigate easily. Birmingham is close by, too, and offers more of the same but is also more monied and snobby. Across the bridge in Windsor there's one of the greatest concentrations of non-janky strip clubs most men will ever see (if that's your thing).

So that's what I got. And I'm not even a frequent visitor, so I'm sure there's lots that I'm missing. f4df might be of some use here, as well.

Detroit or some suburbs outside Detroit?

if its for a day or two and since youve been to A, then go to the D..

take a tour, maybe a busride to congress with the locals.. then go home and cross the state off your list

Nope. Away @ Chiicago on Sunday.
And the concert roster for those days isn't that enticing, either.
Bummer. Go get some good food in Greektown or head to the Magic Stick for some drinks and random craziness; even when there's a show going on upstairs there's some good and interesting people to knock a few back with on the bowling alley level.

hey, do you know anything about Motor City Brewing? Or any recommendations as to where I should get a hotel, like particular streets or neighborhoods? The class itself is apparently in Southfield, but I feel like renting a car and putting it on the company instead of staying there.

I think one of my favorite things about Detroit is Hamtramck...the city inside Detroit. For those that don't know, Detroit got so broke they had to sell off a section, which became a seperate city, Hamtramck, that is completely surrounded by Detroit. Funny little ghetto/polish community. Good bakeries and a great hat shop.

And, go check out the Motown Museum..hang out at Majestic (Magic Stick and all that...big complex with bowling alley, a couple bars a pool room a couple concert venues, etc...fun place) http://www.majesticdetroit.com/

Then, there's a bar in the basement of the ramada Inn off Cass that is pretty good for people watching if you wanna stay out til like 4-5, which is hard to find in Michigan since all booze sales must stop at 2; and they stop selling drinks at 2 as the state mandates, just stay open for a few more hours.
