Yesterday the place I work for sent out 4 separate emails talking about how important it was to call this certain number to find out if we would be closed due to tropical storm ernesto. At 8am I called and it said they were working under normal business hours.

I drove through a "puddle" that was about 2 feet deeper than it appeared to be, my engine hummed for a couple minutes and now my check engine light won't go off. I made it through the storm to work and as soon as I walked in they told me that the school was closed, they just hadn't updated the recording on the number yet.

Anyone know anything about cars? It's running fine. It starts, but the light won't turn off? Do you think it could just be a short? The humming went on for literally 30 seconds and stopped and then it ran fine the rest of the 15 miles to work. But, that stupid light won't go off and I hate the check engine light. Any help?

Put duct tape over the light.

(Thank you Homer Simpson)

I don't know much about cars but I have a Hyundai and my light is constantly on because of the O2 sensor being triggered which isn't important at all. I'm convinced Hyundai rigged it so I'd have to bring it in every 3 months and pay $50 to have them turn it off.

Anyway, don't know if that's your issue or not but it's probably worth taking in once and having them tell you why it's on.

well...here's the weird thing. On my way home I stopped to get gas because I was low and if traffic was going to be so bad I didn't want to run out in one of our many useless tunnels. After I filled up the light went off. Who knows...

man. just before I left california that happened to me. It was triggering the O2 sensor. It happened the day before I was supposed to move back east. I was delayed for a day and had to beg my landlord to let me stay.

They changed the O2 sensor. Light stayed on. Took an O2 sensor out of another Tacoma they had in the shop. Light stayed on. After about 4 hours on the phone with their super extra awesome technicians, they had to go through every single connection. It turned out to be a loose ground wire tripping the light bringing up the code for the O2 sensor. Next time you go in you should have them tighten all the wires for you. I bet the light will stop coming on.

I think that light is called the 'gas gauge'

funny. It wasn't the gas gauge douchebag. haha. You see, I have a check engine light and a little gas pump that lights up when my gas is low. it was the check engine light.

Most vehicles now have the check engine light set at the factory to go off at specific mileage points, etc to encourage owners to bring their car in for "maintenance".

Anything can trigger the light...oil change, spark plugs, emissions, etc. Could just be a coincidence that it went off at the same time. It's just the big motor company's way of getting you to come in and spring $70 for a diagnostics test every so often and to get you all worked up if you don't.

Try the gas cap: unscrew it & then tighten it, tight/tight. This may solve your problem.

Cheers,

Yeah, the not-quite-tight gas cap syndrome is a common engine light cause. Odd about the timing though.

it could have been the gas cap, but i always make sure to spin in three clicks past tight to avoid that problem. Maybe someone was ciphoning (sp)...

Take it Autozone, they'll run a free diagnostic.
