I've been in the mood for some classic funk lately and I've been thinking about putting together a cd mix of some of these 70's era soul classics.

Obners, what do I HAVE to put on there?

(singing)

She's a brick...HOUSE!

does it have to be both funk and soul or can it just be soul? i lean more that way, so...

anything off sex machine
staples - oh happy day (more gospel, but i'm counting it)
betty swann - willie and laura mae (much better than the dusty springfield version)
curtis - pusherman or superfly or both

Are you going for classic funk or wedding music? I think that with funk, the deeper the better, as the stuff like brick house is so ubiquitous that no one wants to hear any of them anymore- or if you did, there's a million comps that already exist that fit the bill.

Whoa. "Willie & Laura Mae Jones" the Tony Joe White song?

I'll throw out:
The Blackbyrds, "Rock Creek Park"
