Decided i really would like to research this. I have tentative plans to do a tour of America, possibly as soon as March.

So could you hit me with the best/worst dive bars possible in your town/city.

One of my favourite dive bars is one a town over (Covina, California) called "Clancy's". Labeled as a sports bar, it harbors the likes of lesbian biker chicks, old drunks and one huge ass bartender called "Bear". A great jukebox with honky tonk tunes, couple of pool tables and a dartboard. Beer selection was quite good.

It's been a couple of years since I've been, but damn, I drank many pints in that fine establishment. Lotsa good memories.

Sweet sounds cool. I would imagine there are some superb dive bars in Colombia. I need to do so research! After sleep.

My favorite dive bar, i.e. where only drinking occurs and there is no real theme to the bar, yet is not scary or incredibly dirty is O'Rourke's Tavern.
Tim Kasher of Cursive and The Good Life has written two songs about it.
It also has the latest last call in downtown Lincoln.

The Outpost Tavern is probably the scariest bar I have been to here in Lincoln. It is one of the oldest bars and is located on the outskirts of town near the Mental Hospital. It only has like three beers on tap, and they are like Budweiser, PBR and High Life. There are pickle cards strewn about the floor of the bar and the clientele is pretty rough looking.
Kelli's Pub near my apartment is one of the worst dive bars I have went to. It is boring and quiet. Only about five people were there when I was there and they seriously had the worst jukebox selections I have ever seen.

was it on hollywood? on on schrader? the only good dive bar i like in hollywood blvd is burgundy room on cahuenga. other than that, every bar in hollywood is too frou frou for my own taste.

bar 107 is in downtown la actually and i'm starting to like downtown la a lot more... they're also trying to change the bar laws in downtown la, so last call will be 4am. if that happens, boy oh boy la will be awesome again.

Sweet, scary is good, very good. Near the mental hospital, they let them out? Put it on my list.

I was at a bar called the Locker Room after our fantasy draft. They have pool and shuffleboard. Also, we played a game called "Who's number three" where you had to identify the third hottest girl in the bar, which was tough because the crowd was so ugly that only the first hottest girl was definitely a girl, or human. Also she was a 4, maybe, and I'd been drinking.

R.I.P. Bar Salon Skala. Where the hip intermingled with absolute freaks and drug dealers and high school professors came to get fabulous. Bathroom caked with cocaine, and the bar stocked with tall cans of Labatt 50, cigarettes at $.25 a pop, counterfeit jeans, and Mariah, the surprisingly sexy barmaid. R.I.P. Skala.

Now Montreal is overpopulated with video lotto bars that are even more depressing since the smoking ban. I can't name one dive that I really like at this point.

Agh not sure. It was on the next main street/road on the right/west of Schrader. Damn i wish i could remember. Possibly the road that runs straight down to Amoeba on Sunset, in fact, yeah i think it was???

Edit- Cahuenga i think could be spot on & i remember the name Burgundy room. Really fucked up right, skanky coked up whores & dirty old men.

pretty much. or 45-yr old "punks" who are too old to realize that they shouldn't be dressing the way they do... but nonetheless, it's still an awesome bar. and cahuenga has quite a few bars there.

Hey while you here! Every Sunday i used to walk to a flea market/car boot sale on Sunset. It was next to a school. It was maybe @ Vine? I was asked the other day by a friend where it was at. I used to get some wicked 2nd hand t-shirts. You know where i mean at all? Sorry for vague directions, hoping it's well known.

Mmm i don't remember any other bars anywhere between Hollywood & Sunset on this road, so maybe not. The road before?

I'll get the map out tommorow, but the burgundy rings bell. But it was seriously dive'ish. Serious alcoholic's bar. Crazy experience & i've been to some fucking shitholes in my time.

My favorite Dive bar changed owners and is now officially called, "The Dive"

i like it, but not as much as when it was called Smockey Bar and was really a dive.

Funny how the LA'ers come out for the Bukowski thread.

The Circle on Main St on the edge of Venice.
The Frolic Room on Hollywood Blvd.
The Tiki Room on Sunset in Silverlake.

Further south: The Alibi on University in San Diego

Yup, I know where it is. It's off of Sunset near the Gower Studios.

Aghh confused, but it was on Wilcox between sunset & Hollywood, just around the corner from Schrader b4 you get to sunset!!! agh that explains it. I will show the map. Seriously i sleep now.

I don't think i went to The Frolic Room, although i did go to Uncle Buk's grave.

8 minute drive from my house, and well worth it, especially after 11pm.

cheap drinks, midnight 2 for 1, killer food (espesh the pork rib sangwich). 'round midnight the place fills up with strippers, rough cooks and bar types, and the bathroom stalls are always full (sniff sniff). they've always got a tv playing some weird shit, and the bartenders (hot russian girls) are always friendly/coked up.

i spent Thursday night there with some friends, and i'm still nursin' a big one. i also think i was groped.

I'd tell you about the dive I go to, but you won't come to this area.

Sundown Tavern, Ruston Louisiana.

The big night is the Tuesday Night Blues Jam ("If you can play, you can play"), but the best feature of the bar was the 4:00 Jeopardy! screenings. The bartender would turn off all music (stacks and stacks of vinyl in addition to the cds, no jukebox) and 90% of the bar would gather around the big screen and shout out questions to Alex Trebek's answers.

The best part is that this is a decidedly working class bar, and the competition is fierce. These guys look rough and dirty or redneckish, but they know their trivia. It was really fun,

To recap: busiest night is Tuesday; 4 pm drinking encouraged; tons of vinyl and damn good music even if on cd. In his younger, rowdier (kuh-kaine) years, the owner was known to throw out anyone who showed up in a polo shirt, because he didn't want "no faggit frat douchebags in my bar".

Oh yeah, the sandwich shop part also served chili dogs. Only place in town.
