Crocodile Man Steve Irwin dead

THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

Well we all knew he wasn't going to make it to a ripe old age; it was just a question of what animal was going to do him in.

And I'm sure this was a far less violent way for him to go than most people were betting on.

And Dalen, somehow I don't think Irwin was just swimming around with them...

From the smh
Quote:
Ross Coleman, acting director at at University of Sydney Institute of Marine Science, told smh.com.au it was "quite rare" for someone to die from contact with a stingray and he couldn't recall hearing of another incident.

Stingrays were "dangerous if provoked", he said.

"As a recreational diving instructor you hear of people getting injured by standing on them ... but they rarely die."

Isn't this the guy who once dangled his own baby over a crocodile?

He had it coming for all the stupid, dangerous, look at me! stunts he pulled over the years.

You know, this really hasn't been a good 12 or so months for our "cultural" icons. Big Kev, Steve Irwin, Paul Hogan in a spot of bother over tax evasion...

Ha. I knew I was forgetting someone! Especially when he went out in such a typically Carlton way...

And Gough's not looking so good, though I would remove the "s from the cultural for him

Oh, and speaking of, Chippy of course!

Yeah, it's a bit harsh. He 'had it coming' only in the sense that he was tempting fate/God/whatever every time he 'interacted' with animals so clearly wasn't going to live to be the oldest guy in the world. It's not like he was out there carpet bombing places...

The kid thing was clearly stupid though

I don't think so. He had him firmly in his grasp.

My brother used to dangle me by the legs over the balcony of our three storey house to get information out of me all the time. And i turned out fine.
