He had it coming for all the stupid, dangerous, look at me! stunts he pulled over the years.

one of the stupidest posts i've read in a while.

Yeah, it's a bit harsh. He 'had it coming' only in the sense that he was tempting fate/God/whatever every time he 'interacted' with animals so clearly wasn't going to live to be the oldest guy in the world. It's not like he was out there carpet bombing places...

The kid thing was clearly stupid though

I don't think so. He had him firmly in his grasp.

My brother used to dangle me by the legs over the balcony of our three storey house to get information out of me all the time. And i turned out fine.

Anthony told me you made him eat dog poo once when he was younger. You also beat him regularly. I guess that sort of thing runs in your family...

Steve Irwin was and still is an Australian icon. I messaged nearly everyone I know as soon as I found out. This is terrible.

Wow! That's horrible news...damn, I really liked the guy. And he's got little ones, geez. RIP, Steve.

I like anyone who is genuinely enthusiastic about a subject and Steve Irwin certainly was. It's an increasingly rare thing these days.

I saw him on TV only the other day with his young daughter. Sad.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one seeing the need for this to be pointed out...

While I'm here, Mick or Cherry, have you been watching Ten News? I mean, yeah, sorry he died and all that, great wildlife ambassador etc, but the need to mention it after every fucking ad break, "the world is in shock", and a 6min interview with their LA correspondent to gauge the American reaction? For fucks sake, is that all they have to report on, and are we that dependent on American approval?

Ten truly is the decaf version of Fox (minus the personality)

EDIT: and they've just come back from an ad break and had a 30sec spot on it AGAIN

I'm sorry, Channel Ten really shits me...and I'm only watching it out of morbid curiosity

What's funny is that America isn't even awake at this hour. Unless, you're in Hawaii.

They should cancel everything on every channel for the next week and just simulcast a continuous tribute.

Shit, I'm up early and find out THIS.

Croc Hunter was a top 5 stoner show for me back in the day, and even if Irwin did really start to grate on me over the years, he was still overall game tight in my book.

RIP dude.

Crocodile Man Steve Irwin dead

THE Crocodile Man, Steve Irwin, is dead.

He was killed in a freak accident in Cairns, police sources said. It is understood he was killed by a sting-ray barb that went through his chest.

He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas.

BTW, do all of you guys' news stories read like this? Somewhere between a church newsletter and a parody of a high school newspaper?

It isn't as bad as the time those miners were stuck down that hole. At least most people care about this. I always got the impression that Steve Irwin was more popular in America than here. But damn, did you watch Neighbours? Things are getting pretty heated.

I'm glad my kids are a little older now. When they were 4 and 5 and huge Crocodile Hunter fans, it'd have been much harder to explain to them that Stevo just got killed by a Spongebob critter.

I feel bad for his kids. Terri's been in this line of work (starting with large predators in the U.S.) most of her life and must have understood the liklihood of this happening. But Bindi and Bob probably thought their dad was indestructible.

This is sad, we just saw this on the news a short while ago.

I actually just read online that he was too close to the stingray-above him in fact-and the sting ray took it's stinger and shoved it up straight through his chest puncturing his heart.

Ugh.

What a shitty way to go. I liked the guy but even I said to Josh that with his line of work it's not surprising that it would happen sooner or later. But it's still sad.

A shame. I mean, with his line of work, I always wondered how he never had an unfortunate accident. Of course, until now. He always seemed like he might be slightly nutty, but he was very much likeable. And he was very much into what he does.

Awesome...this came up on MP's IMDB site:

His obituary mentioned that he was "one of only a handful of people to survive the bite of a West African Gaboon viper."
