I am an anti-dentite for sure. I hate going to the dentist. But now, I get to clean all the nasty junk out of my mouth with this baby:

I despise trips to the detist.

How long has it been since you all have been to the dentist? Me...well, let's just say it has been a LONG LONG time.

it has been since february. they called in july to make another appointment, but i said i was very busy and their hours didn't jive well with mine. i'll probably go back sometime this fall.

i also hate going to the dentist, especially since one of my teeth is very sensitive to extreme temperatures because an old dentist fucked up fixing an occlusal.

last visit was july. i make it a point to go every 6 months, because i had a 5 year hiatus at one point in my life, and they ended up spending a LONG time trying to clean my teeth. it was not pleasant. now i go twice a year and the cleaning is pretty quick.

make sure you ask for a gentle hygienist.

March of 2005, after my bike accident which involved landing on my face/teeth. I still need root canals on my front two teeth, but I'm afraid. I might go to the dentist this winter for a cleaning, I know I can feel a few cavities brewing.

I've inherited my mom's cavity-ridden, sensitive, roots exposed teeth and my dad's fear of the dentist.

Dentists are a very necessary evil. I hate 'em too but I go every six months. You can try to clean your teeth with those tools if you want, but they're not really cleaning your teeth - they're cleaning under your gums. Do you really want to be digging under your gums with no training?

I sound like an old fogey cuz maybe that's what I am now, but flossing daily really does make a huge difference in your dentist visits. I never used to floss until several years back and can only thank genetics (33 years old and zero cavities) for preventing dental nightmares, but I sure had rough visits every time. After a break due to lack of insurance (from being laid off) I went back and had a HORRIBLE experience and jumped on the flossing/electric toothbrush bandwagon as the dentist suggested (practically begged.) Every visit since then has been comparatively wonderful. I still dread it, however - I just don't like people sticking sharp, pointy things around in my mouth.

I guess I am not as concerned about digging around my gums without training because from my experiences with the dentist they don't really have any training either.

If I want to go to the dentist, I will just save some money and stick some needles in my gums then brush my teeth.

I floss twice a day. I still have my wisdom teeth. And I am sure that I will go to the dentist soon because I get nervous about my teeth. I used to have this recurring dream that my teeth just crumbled in my mouth and disappeared.

i didn't go for four years or so and developed some gum issues. Now i go every three months. It's not so bad, dentists seem to have gotten much more skilled and gentle in the last decade or so.

This is the floss that I use. It's got toothpaste on it so it's like brushing between your teeth. I love it.

This thread reminds me that I need to make another appointment.

Never disliked going to the dentist. Never had a bad experience, even when they pulled my out four wisdom teeth (one of which they had to break in pieces and then extract it).

I don't mind dentists, but I have not gone for about 3 years. I'll be going to one in Mexico next few weeks. I had my wisdoms yanked in an (A-Tex) Pharmaco study and got paid $350 plus free meds for it. I had braces for nearly 4 years, so I got used to regular torture back in junior high. I floss/gargle 2x and have one of those vibator/toothbrush gigs.

That's a common dream, usually linked to a subconscious fear of aging.

Hey Timmy, I got you beat... It's been half my age since I've been to the dentist. I'm almost 26... yeah, a long time.

I haven't been to the dentist since I was in my early teens.

The only problem with my teeth are that the front two are what's known as 'Tombstone Teeth' that could bite through iron girders; quite the opposite from any problem the dentist could solve.

I probably will have to go sooner or later, I have fillings older than about half the posters on Obner, but that day hasn't come yet.

If you drink plenty milk and brush with, say, toothpaste, rather than sugarcubes, I think the potential for mishap is actually minimal.

Really? That's pretty interesting. I had the dreams when I was still in High School. It must have been a very subconcious fear because back then I thought I would live forever. Mostly because time seemed to go nice and slow.

I did some research on it once and the things I read was that it was either a fear that I wasn't taking good care of my teeth or that I was afraid of death. I guess the fear of aging and fear of death are pretty similar though.

But you're from the UK, so bad teeth is stereotypically common in your parts eh?

Been nearly 2 years, but that's mostly to do with the complete lack of dentists in my home town/country areas generally making it at least a 6 (if not 9) month wait for an appointment. And I'm only occasionally home.

I really should just start seeing one here, seeing as I have private health insurance for it.

But my teeth are generally pretty good, so long as I cut back on sugary drinks, though they have started to move back a little after having braces off for so many years
