Of all the massive craziness going on at the edges of this picture, look at the two MONSTERS charged with serving all of these drunks and drug heavies. Those dudes are undoubtedly two of the heaviest mofos to OPERATE in that town. Post a picture of the owner, Tim.. (a name that makes me visibly stiffen)

I nearly had a stroke when I saw him in the right corner of that second shot.

A murderer.

In Manhattan, you can't beat The Scratcher. In Brooklyn (Bay Ridge to be exact) Scruffy Murphy's is the place to be.

The Owl Tree in San Francisco is cool.

The Green Mill in Chicago has to be the place to go.

Yeah, Tim looks like he might be kin to Buddy Roberts. The look on his face (barely contained rage, and massive cocaine abuse) is fucking priceless.

Either that or something along the lines of "Hell, I tour managed Marshall Tucker, Little Feat, AND The Atlanta Rythym Section. Shit, those were times man. No meant yes."

I'm kind of sorry I never got to see first hand what went on the "office" of that joint after hours.

and though muchos damage was done there, almost every bar in Athens with a locking bathroom has a story involving one of us.

I'll throw in a vote for the Gravity Pub in East Atlanta as well.

The Alley Cat was voted top-10 dive bar in America by Stuff Magazine a few years back. It's a good place but it's in an annoying part of town so it loses a little luster for me.

My favorite dive bar in Indy is probably The Mouse Trap. Alley Cat is good and more "famous" though.

Also, hurting its case, the Alley Cat has a MySpace profile:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=8856019

...but it does have a bartender that looks like Dave Grohl.

There are two types of Dive bars. One has the aesthetic appeal of the dive bar and has all the right elements but has a respectable clientele. I can have fun there and talk to women, etc.

The other is scary. The one on the edge of town that you could get stabbed in the parking lot over a meth deal gone bad. The place usually has no windows, particle board on the walls somewhere and maybe carpet on the walls/ceiling

Athens - The Roadhouse and Georgia Bar are of the first kind. I've spent many hours in these.

Klassics - this is the 2nd kind. Well away from all the college bars. I've never set foot in this place and never plan to. Scary.

Atlanta - Gravity Pub, Northside tavern, Clermont Lounge, 5 Paces Bar. - Pretty popular but most definitley dives.

Lenny's - I've been here once and have no desire to go again. This place can somehow stay open until 4am while the rest of Atlanta closes at 3am. Don't go here without friends kids.

Chicago
Carol's
Hideout
L&L Tavern (coke on the bar... check!)
Marie's Riptide Lounge (coke in the bathroom... check!)
Simon's (it's dirtier than dive-ish)

Don't even get me started on suburban bars. Hit Berwyn if you're up for some real sleaze. Or Cicero if you're feeling brave...

in Atlanta... I always liked the Star Community Bar on Moreland Ave., and christ, now the name escapes me... some divey place in Va. Highlands (which anyone who is familiar with Va. Hi knows a dive bar in the area is an oxymoron).... hmmm.... not Dark Horse.... I don't think it's open anymore anyway. I want to say it was two words... I know, that doesn't help much, eh?

Never went to Scrap Bar in Atlanta but heard it was a hoot.

In PDX, the Limelight in my 'hood. Cheap strong drinks, smoky, free pool on Sundays, and a killer jukebox. Bar of the Gods (or BOG) on Hawthorne. Low Brow on Glisan. And although it is no longer in the same location, the freakiness that was Hung Far Low in Chinatown cannot be fucked with.... seriously David Lynch territory.

I wonder about how some of you guys define a dive bar. I definitely don't agree with Dalen's definition. Most of the regular patrons of what I consider dives couldn't probably afford cocaine and strippers wouldn't have any interest in going there.

And what exactly makes the Roadhouse a dive? It looks like a well-lit and maintained, crowded bar with a respectable crowd, good beers on tap, and bartenders that don't hate people. Not exactly what I'd call a dive.

hey billy, see my definition of the 2 different types of dive bars.

I think I real true dive place isn't really someplace I wanna hang out.

It looks like a well-lit and maintained -- NOPE
crowded bar with a respectable crowd -- after midnite, and its a college/townie bar
good beers on tap -- Budweiser, sure.
and bartenders that don't hate people -- oh they hate you alright.
Not exactly what I'd call a dive.

Anyway, this is going by Dalen's definition. AND, not exactly a place for the faint hearted.

Not Bukowski-esque, but a dive bar by most standards, to be sure.

So the Guinness and Bass taps in the picture someone posted don't reflect actual beers available for purchase?

Well, in that case I can say that they sell more PBR than they do a lot of things. I think you are splitting hairs. See Derris' post above.

Come to ATL, we will take you to Trackside at 4am on a Sunday night. ;)
