The best Pegboy show I ever saw (and also one of my favorite shows ever) was at the opening of the Chicago House of Blues. That was a strange venue for them.

I was lucky enough to see them in some shitty club in NO before they broke up. They rocked the shit outta that place.

Dreadful. I stood through them as an opener at Maxwells. They weren't as bad as the Lunachicks, but they were close.

They've never broken up (as far as I know). They play in Chicago on an irregular basis. Are you from the future?

day 1: pretty good. the shipping news started out with a good set, very heavy on the math-rocky sound. they even had a show-only single available for free. i haven't listened to it yet, though. supersystem sounded all right from where we sat, but i wasn't impressed with them again.

girls against boys were awesome - played venus luxure in its entirety, then two other songs at the end. absolutely the highlight of the first night. one guy next to me was going bonkers through their whole set. they sounded very good and had a good rapport going with the crowd.

ted leo was also pretty good. it appeared to me that he felt weird about playing the event because he's not yet actually released anything on touch & go. he addressed that, played new songs, talked about it a little more, played more new songs. then he ended with "suspect device." good concise set from him.

!!! were good at first, but nic offer can really ruin that band. all he does is talk talk talk and put all the attention on himself with three dance moves that he constantly goes back to. then he broke a mic stand and said they weren't getting paid for the show, so he might as well break something because it wouldn't be taken out of their guarantee. i didn't understand that reasoning. we left to beat the rush about halfway through their set.

Ted's set was a little heavy on the new material, but it sounded good and energetic. I had hoped to catch the Shipping News set, but ended up working a late. I did my best to avoid Supersystem and managed to miss most of GvsB due to a delicious chicken sandwich and fries. My friends and I left a few songs into the !!! set due to Nic Offer's babbling.

Eric Bogosian's evil twin stood next to me for most of Ted Leo's set.

I will probably miss The New Year and most of Uzeda due to a charity walk in the morning, but hopefully I'll be there for Pegboy and (most of) the rest of the day. Katie has my number and I have hers.

I got a free Skype earphone/mic combo at the WXRT tent. Thanks, Skype. Where were you two nights ago when I needed you?

The Shipping News single is a 9 minute instrumental song. Needs another listen before I pass judgment.

!!! would be really good with a different vocalist, or no vocalist. Not just his patter, but his singing and dancing are annoying to, as we discussed at the show.

The guy next to you for GvsB was hilarious. "Louder louder louder", "Thank you Scott!". Also, the two songs they played at the end were, in case anyone reading this is interested, "Kill the Sexplayer" and (I think) "Super-fire".

See you guys in a few hours for New Year.

So did you guys miss Uzeda?

That would be a mistake.

I saw them play an instremtal set opening for Shellac in Athens last Monday. Good shit.

day 2: got there a little late, saw the ex and killdozer right away. didjits were pretty cool. i liked their set a lot. negative approach and scratch acid were also both good. the crowd was really into both. man or astroman was excellent, as always. they even fired up the tesla coil.

and then i saw what people had been talking about - big black. i can't say i'm a huge fan or even know their music very well. i respect their place in music history and the contributions that they've made to certain sounds that i enjoy, but i wasn't losing my mind over them playing for 15 minutes. they were good, though. and they were ridiculously loud, even from far back near the other stage.

Today was a good day. I saw every band except the short set by Tim & Andy of Silkworm, though I also missed parts of Scratch Acid and Pegboy. Man or Astroman? definitely won the day though. There'll be a playoff with them, GvsB, tomorrow's winner and one wild card next weekend.

Also met Katie, a princess and ChicagoMike today, so bonus points for that.

Tomorrow should be even better, as I'm more familiar with many of the bands.

I was hoping to make it for The New Year and Uzeda but other obligations forced me to be late.

Pegboy: sloppy but fun as always

I met up with Katie and Shmoo at this point to grab a drink in the VIP section, where I ran into an old college roommate

The Ex: energetic and enjoyable, if a little heavy on material I wasn't very familiar with (I only have 3 of their albums)

Katie took off and I parted ways with Shmoo with the intention of leaving for a few hours, but I ran into some friends on my out and was dragged back in.

Killdozer: missed most of their set, but surprised (scared?) Z and Red by finding them and introducing myself - chatted with Red for a few before they took off with their group

Jon & Kat (Mekons/The Ex): listened far from the stage while talking with friends

Didjits: I didn't like this band "back in the day." I still don't like them - just not my cup of tea.

PW Long: Decent acoustic set

Negative Approach: CIRCLE PIT

Sally Timms: I have no idea where I was for this set...eating?

Scratch Acid: Meh - not really my thing.

Man...or Astroman?: Fun(ny) as always - wish I was closer to the stage

Big Black: Another "not my cup of tea bands" even though I'm a big fan of Shellac - the last song was cool

Shellac: Good mix of semi-new and old, the usual on-stage antics and audience participation

The real highlight of the show was spotting Z and Red later in the evening near the food tents and saying "HEY!" to both of their faces. They just kept walking. I think they were just in a hurry to get somewhere, but it was strange and amusing.

I don't remember this at all. Trust me, I'm not even that rude to people that I don't like. In a crowd of 10K+, I'm sure that I/we just didn't see/hear you.

I'm going to write about this weekend o' fun in Hip Displeasure sometime this week. So, like, pay attention and read my shit.

red, you're insane. Pinback were absolutely amazing. And Rob Crow is a funny, funny man as well.

Maybe you should just go back to your weird ethnic food and leave the music to me.
