the towers and pentagon got hit. I was in the library at school and notice a bunch of people watching a TV. I didn't pay much attention at first, then somebody told me what was going on. This is our generation's Pearl Harbor.

I was staying with my girlfriend's aunt and uncle at the time. I got out of the shower, and the uncle was like, "Hey, come look at this! A plane just flew into one of the towers!"

I drove to school that morning, listening to Stern, and got all the way to the parking lot before deciding to ditch.

I was sitting in concert band, when the secretary came down and told us...class pretty much ended there...followed by the rest of the day in front of the tv.

I had literally just moved to D.C. from London (arriving Sept. 1) and was in a meeting at my new job when one of our board members called to say that the first tower was hit. We thought it was an awful accident at that point. Later that morning we were unable to make calls out and there was a steady stream of traffic rushing by our office in Old Town Alexandria -- we were about a mile away from the Pentagon and didn't know that was going on until much later when we saw plumes of smoke.

I don't think I've ever felt that much sadness.

Is CNN still planning on airing their original coverage today?

Online was my understanding. That pay service is going to be opened up for free and played in real time.

I'm sure they'll sap up the television airwaves aplenty, however.

was at work when someone yelled frtom the conference room to come and look at the tv. the room filled with employees, then the president and owners sent everyone home for the next 2 days. listened to stern all the way home, and then watched on tv till the evening. that was a dark day.

That Stern broadcast was something else. They couldn't have done a better job.

A was at work (always the first one in) when the next guy came in and asked me "Did you hear that a plane hit one of the World Trade Center buildings?"

I responded no, but that sounded terrible, thinking that it was small private or commuter plane accidentally hitting the building. Then the rest of the news came flooding in, and we all knew that it was more than that, obviously.

Office was dismissed by 9:00 (CDT) and I was shocked at how efficient Metra was at evacuating the downtown area, via the train system. They did a helluva job.

EDIT: Sharon was 8.5 months pregnant with Ethan at the time and Cary was just 2. It was a beautiful day, weather-wise, so when I got home the three of us went and spent the day in the next town over and had a nice little walk, enjoying the weather. Of course, Cary was oblivious and ran around like the 2-year-old he was. But it was very spooky, too as nobody else was out. I remember thinking how it would have been an amazing day, if not for the circumstances.

During Cary's nap and after he was asleep, we had the TV on and watched the coverage. We didn't want him exposed to that at such a young age. He would have noticed and been asking a lot of questions. Bright, very observant little guy. Still is, as is his brother.

I was at school. A fellow teacher came to my door and whispered the news to me. Shock, confusion, anger. The rest of the school day was spent viewing CNN.

i was listening to the sports talk radio, probably excited to hear some Eagles talk and the host (angelo cataldi) said "go turn on your TV's" and so i did. I watched in horror for a little while. At that time my job was only four blocks away so i decided to walk to work to be with friends. The mood of the office kind of freaked me out, and people were making jokes to deal with their shock so I left and came home. I sat infront of the TV for the rest of the day.

I was assigned to a first period study hall, and one of my students, Rori Gillen, came back from the office, stunned, and told us the news. We didn't know whether to take her seriously or not at first, but she was so shocked that we all got uneasy. by 2nd period we were watching it on the t.v. in the music department and saw the second plane hit.

I was asleep. The girl who lived upstairs from me called and said, "our country is under attack by terrorists." No lie. I was like "well, that sounds a little melodramatic." And it was.

I was barely awake, getting ready for my new job. As is typical of my morning routine, I turned on the news which immediately became somber when they switched to the CNN broadcast of the tower footage. I immediately woke up my mom to tell her what happened and we both watched as the first tower collapsed, then the second. All I remember saying was, "Oh no, oh no..." and feeling my heart constrict.

I will never forget that day, because in the middle of history class a girl pulled my pants down whilst accidentally also grabbing my underwear. To this day she insists it was unintentional, but i have my doubts. She copped an eyeful.

i was acrss the street from tower 1 when the debris from the first plane came showering down on our bldg [90 west street]. we ran downstairs and there was debris and body parts everywhere. everyone was in a panic. we all thought it had been a bomb. i ran to a payphone to make a few calls to let people know i was ok, then was walking down west st when the 2nd plane flew right over me, about 2 blocks south of the wtc. it sounded like a fighter plane firing missiles at the ground, the roar was so loud.
i ran down to whitehall st and hopped the turnstile, getting on the last subway out of lower manhattan. was home by 9:25, then went up on my roof and watched the towers fall in complete disbelief.
i will never ever forget that day.

edit: the really terrifying thing is i had worked both in the 60's & 70's in tower 2 on various floors up until may of 2001. we moved across the street and all we did was complain about how we lost our beautiful view of the harbor. makes me feel sick now when i think of that.

I was driving to work (this was back when I used to actually have to be somewhere on time every day), and like Jewels, listening to sports talk radio. My buddy Hassler called my cell and told me to flip over to Imus--some serious shit was going down.

I went in to the office, made a bank deposit, and then went home to watch it all on TV

Nick, I remember when you first posted about that day's experience and horribly sad I felt for you.

I was running my usual late for work and my wife had the morning news on tv and was calling for me to get out of the shower.

I was asleep - it was around midnight or so here when it happened and I had my final end-of-year-11 exam on the next day, so my brother and mum were watching it live but didn't wake me. Got up the next morning and was transfixed by the footage until I had to leave. After the exam we drove to Sydney for an athletics competition so listened to the radio which was alternating between saturation coverage of that and (ironically) the collapse Ansett Airlines a day or two before.

I think I overdosed on it that day though, with 6 hours in a car then several more in the hotel just hearing the same small amount of news over and over again. There's only so much you can take and I just couldn't handle seeing or hearing anything more about it for a few days after - not that I could look away, of course

School. I think it was lunch and a friend came up and said something about World War 3.

We didn't get the rest of the story until the next class when a teacher informed us.
