Quote:
U2 have begun working on their new album with Rick Rubin, they have revealed.

The Irish rock legends are understood to have commenced recording the follow-up to 2004's How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb with the super-producer.

Rubin, famed for his work with Slayer, Public Enemy, Run-DMC, and the Beastie Boys, is also credited with resurrecting Johnny Cash's career, with the series of American Recordings albums.

In a posting on their official website, U2 announced news of the new material and Rubin's involvement, while also confirming reports of forthcoming work with Green Day. The two bands are expected to get together shortly to record a cover of the Skids' 1976 track "The Saints Are Coming."

Green Day have been speaking about the initiative, which will benefit the Edge's Music Rising charity, a fund that seeks to assist musicians who lost their instruments in Hurricane Katrina.

In a posting on their official website, the band commented: "One year later, the devastation is still fresh in our minds, and we'd like to keep it in yours. New Orleans has always been a special city to us, being a hotbed of music and creativity, and it's hard to believe parts of the Gulf region still remain devastated. We feel that it's important to continue to raise awareness."

Yikes.
Is Bob Rock next?

I read about this on the weekend. I can't wait to hear what comes of this. I hope they sound like Zep after all is said and done.

What's so bad about Rick Rubin?

It's not like he could ruin their sound, especially the way they sound now.

Rubin won't screw it up because Bono will go off the wagon during sessions and they'll wind up doing more raucous tunes.

My prediction.

I'm not sure why this is a problem and deserves a thumbsdown unless you just dont like U2.

Is there something wrong with Rick Rubin or did I miss a memo?

I mean, you guys' god, Brian Eno produced their best shit but he also produced the last one which wasnt that great.

They're probably dude a shakeup having had the same group producing them for a minute now.

Is having Rubin do this album worse than if Nigel Godrich did it?

Rock's been at it for so many years he's produced both gems and stinkers. Sure he put's a sheen on everything and brings the mid-80's rock to it all, but he's also done very good work.

Sometimes it's the artists who suck, not the producer.

There was a local rumor a while back he was suppose to be doing the next Bright Eyes album at the new studio that Mike Mogis is building in Omaha.

I believe there are a couple of different folks here who think Rubin is absolute shit. I am not one of them. In fact, I'm throwing on Electric right now.

I know Rock just produced The Tragically Hip's new album. I don't know how I should feel about that as I don't know much about Rock other than Metallica. And Rock and Hyde, I guess.

i think his reocrdings tend to be really dry and particularly non-80's sounding.

Speaking as a fan of The Cult:
Rubin produced some very crappy albums for them, as did Bob Rock. I can't think of anything good either has done since 1992. Sure Bob produced Sonic Temple and Metallica's black album, but after that...yuck.
I had this one EP of Rick Rubin producing some Queen remakes and honset to God on the cover, the producer credit said "Ruined by Rick Rubin" I whole-heartedly concurred with that statement.

Well, he didn't exactly ruin those Johnny Cash albums.

Also, Bloor, I don't think timmyjoe is a big Eno fan.

Are you talking about Rock or Rubin. Rock has the slick. Rubin has the dry.

I am guessing there will be some mediocre song writing with some delay effects on the guitar.

How do those Petty records sound that Rubin did?

I don't think I have anything that Rubin has done since Electric.

What's his reputation these days? Does he guide and help shape or just capture a sound? U2 tends to need some serious collaborators, not just some monkey to record the magic. Eno and Lanois basically brought them back to life by cobbling together Beautiful Day on their own.

And Eno didn't do the last U2 - the finished thing was mostly Steve Lillywhite after they ditched the Chris Thomas sessions.

Wildflowers is one of my favourite Petty albums. I think it sounds absolutely great.

I don't have a problem with Rick. If a Rick Rubin produced U2 record sucks, I think the blame will fall more on U2 rather than Rick. As for Bob Rock....I think they'd have to stumble through Bob Clearmountain, Brendan O'Brien or Tom Lord Alge, etc. before finally bottoming out with Bob Rock.

I've heard rumors that Rick is supposed to produce the new Faint record. Of course, I have no recollection of where I once saw that reference.

I seemed to remember something like that too, but he (Eno) is listed here as a producer and that was my only reference while I was at work.
