But yeah, the almost universal disdain for U2 on this board is baffling to me too, Dalen.

Must be something about dudes who live in shitty houses--we all like U2.

Funny, this is exactly what I was thinking when I opened this thread. This thread is also good evidence of why Dumpjack is awesome.

Rick Rubin is a fucking badass, IMO. I can see only good rock and or roll coming out of this pairing.

Oh yeah, I'm a big U2 dork from way back and I dig parts of every record.

3/4 of the new one sounds about right by my math. There are some clunkers there, though.

I saw that Rubin said that he wants U2 to have "amazing songs" before he records them - which he is supposed to be doing right now. That's kind of against the standard eno/lanois m.o. of massaging songs to life.

Could be great, could be horrible.

I don't hate their last two albums and actually like a few tracks a lot. But it bugs me that Bono masks the fact that he's lost quite a bit of vocal range by yelping, yipping, hooting, slide-singing, bellowing and striking macho poses. It reeks of "old guy posturing young" and he just shouldn't do that. So they come across as a weird amalgam of literate Adult Contemporary and Laugh At Old Dudes Who Think They Rawk.

I wish they'd go back and listen to things like "Running To Stand Still" and "Stay (Far Away, So Close)" and remember how to do it right.

No more "Elevation"/"Vertigo" silliness, please.

see i'm a believer in U2 still be capable of delivering some rock out business. while vertigo got cained to death, when i first heard it i was blown away by it rockin' as hard as it did. they'll still got some heavier tunes in them, and i'll glad when they release them. i def wouldn't consider them silly (ok, maybe the corny countdown in the beginning of Vertigo).

as far as Bono's voice, yeah, he's making up for it sometimes. fuckers gettin' up there, give him a break ;)

He needs his cut to make a female suit, cos dude IS Buffalo Bill from Silence of the Lambs.

1. I agree, but I think he chalks it up to artistic license, and would say that he is a badass singer and he's just giving the people what they want.

2. I couldn't agree more. They need more songs that build up the energy again, and have lyrics that mean something.

3. These are a couple of my favorite of their more recent tunes. There were more off the newest record that I liked better than the prior. I think they are writing too many songs for easy listening stations and sappy movie soundtracks instead of just rawking like they used to. Is it too much for a band to put out a consistant album instead of including power ballads and slow crap? Why do artists feel the need to put a lot of variety into an album instead of making it flow (like Joshua Tree)? Is it the throw a bunch of stuff at the wall and see what sticks mentality?

I loved All That You Can't Leave Behind, but thought the last album was extremely mediocre except for a few great songs.

They need Eno now more than ever.

The song "vertigo" was a classic U2 song... the album was middle level U2.

U2 are the only band left who is working in the "old language" and one of the few bands left that can make me cry.

That Rubin is working with U2 might be great, it might wind up with crap... simply the combination assures neither. We'll see.

"Ain't there one damn song that can make me break down and cry..."

I see them live... I listen to their whole catalogue... I listen to old and new songs in live recordings... Edge's guitar was and IS still an intense prayer... shards of sound that make being "cool" so totally irrelevant...

Oh, I stand corrected about the Eno production thing. I think they used some leftover stuff from All That You Can't Leave Behind, and so he got the credit.

There's quite a bit of the Chris Thomas sessions out there, and they made the right decision to ditch it.

My God! This thread is chock-a-block with Yail and LooGAR taking third-tier boarders to the grammatic woodshed, yet not one (explicit) mention of "improve your reading comprehension skill". I am ashamed to have ever been in the South's thrall....

I think it's well documented that Obner does not like rock and roll.
