note to self: don't buy mastadon t-shirt
because they're the kind of band
that will get you fired for downloading their leak

MASTODON will actually be junk food in a matter of months (dramatically speaking, anyway). In February, the band will make its big-screen debut alongside the Cartoon Network's Meatwad, Frylock and Master Shake in "Aqua Teen Hunger Force: The Movie".

"I get this random call from an Atlanta phone number, and I answer and it's Dave Willis," drummer Bränn Dailor said, referring to the man who voices Meatwad and wrote and directed the film with Matt Maiellaro. "I was freaked out because that's one of my favorite shows of all time. We totally geek out on that stuff, and I've bought the DVDs for the guys in TOOL and THE MARS VOLTA as gifts."

MASTODON wrote and recorded a track for the movie, but they weren't responsible for its lyrics — those were provided by Willis and include the line, "Leave your babies outside/ We'll run over them after the show."

"It's the opening song, and we're going to be animated as movie snacks," in the style of the animated musical advertisements that played before the beginning of the main attraction decades ago, Dailor said. "It's the 'Let's all go to the lobby' song, but it's a thrash song."

and everyone that downloaded it felt great shame and
they deleted their files and wrote apology letters to the band

i would be one of those people
i really do like them
and im a little jealous that you got to interview them

i just get a bit bitchy when the industry handles things like big babies
instead of just ignoring it - or you know... not letting it out of their sight to begin with

to be fair to the Industry
the decision was mostly the bands'
that's what makes them
so completely rock n roll

I really dislike this record. gave it two listens today. seems all over the place. like they collaborated with mr. bungle even. blah..sorry.

Yeah, I kind of felt that way, too, but a few more listens and it sorted itself out. I felt that way about the other 2 (well, 3, really, including the debut EP/now-album (with the extra tracks added in.) Something about them just demands some extra time to work out the weirdness in their style, I don't know why.

I think it's a kick-ass album, and so far it's easily metal album of the year.

I'm a shit dude.

And i don't know any good metal.

Listen to Emperor's 'In the Nightside Eclipse" or "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" and say that shit. The harmonies on both those albums are dense and the guitars shred through them like a knife. The drumming evokes controlled chaos while the vocals are bitter and sound like a vicious death yell.

Incantation, Mayhem, and Dissection also have some pretty disturbing stuff.

Mastodon's newest, "Blood Mountain" rocks my world this week. If you like your metal heavy with bold proggy meanderings (and I mean this in the best possible way), then this album is THE one you've been waiting for. Thanks for the nudge, Dalen. I just picked it up yesterday and can't get enough of it at high volume levels.
For old Mastodon fans who loved "Leviathan", you'll be pleasantly surprised. Production is very good btw..

Thought I'd share my initial thoughts. Got to go blast it some more.

Cheers,

Bill

Just wrapping up my third listen to this now so here are my early impressions:

Some very cool sounds here, but I was a little put off at first by the denser, proggier, more Mars Volta-ish sound. It didn't feel as heavy to me as Leviathan did, but I think I might have felt the same way about that record at first although it never would have called to mind any comparisons to Mars Volta.

Anyway, I think I'm starting to come around to it. The riffs are starting to stand out more, and I'm realizing that it's much more grounded and focused than any of Mars Volta's meandering noodlings so I'll just go ahead and toss that comparison aside (although I've seen a lot of other people make it, too). On this last listen, I was actually struck more by the slower, almost sad-sounding songs, maybe just due to contrast, but they're probably the catchiest part so far. I think this one's going to be good to me in the long run.

I don't hear it at all. I really don't get any comparison whatsoever to the Mars Volta. tMV sounds like a bunch of prog bands thrown into a blender on high speed - and I don't mind that sometimes, but it certainly isn't coherent like Mastodon is.

On a different note, I fucking love "Sleeping Giant."

Well, on a pretty superficial level, I don't know of a whole lot of technically proficient prog-metal bands making dense, heavy, contemporary, and forward-thinking music other than Mars Volta and Mastodon.

I don't like Mars Volta at all, though, so obviously there are some big differences.

i listened to this today and i'm not sure if i like it or not. there's parts that sound awesome (those weird vocals on circle of cysquatch) but i don't think i'm really into all the prog influences.

The thing about this album, at least for me, is that it sounds more metal and less prog the more I listen to it.

It didn't grab me as quickly as Leviathan, but it is a really amazing album. It just takes a couple of listens to sort itself out becuase it is so dense. Drinky is right that the more you listen to it, the less "proggy" it seems.
