Today I picked up this Jawbox album For Your Own Special Sweetheart on cd for a buck and a whim and I was pleasantly surprised that it's fucking excellent. It's even better than the similarly-sounding Quicksand and Barkmarket, both who came out around the same time I believe.

Obners, where do I go from here with this band?

I like their self-titled (and final) album from 1996 a lot, too. They followed this up with a b-sides/outtakes album called My Scrapbook of Fatal Accidents that is really solid for what it is. I found their early two albums kind of generic. FYOSS was where they seemed to stumble on the right combination of elements. Too bad they didn't stick around longer.

Also check out Burning Airlines - same singer, very similar style of music. I only have Mission: Control!, but I like it a lot. Never seem to listen to it as often as I mean to, however.

i like the the album that came out before for your own special sweetheart--novelty--and i'll add a vote for the first burning airlines album, it's excellent. i may even like the burning airlines album better than jawbox--it's a three piece and the guitar work (knowing that it's all coming out of one guy who's also singing) is incredible. j. robbins also produced the dismemberment plan's emergency and i.

edit: check allmusic.com too. they have a good page on jawbox

I've got their first release, Grippe. It's not as good as For Your Own..., but you may want to hear it, too.

If you want to check it out, let me know.

i would agree that for your own special sweetheart is probably jawbox's apex. grippe and the self-titled album are both good, but don't carry the punch of fyoss. i have never heard the b-sides collection.

Here's how I rank them:

1. For Your Own Special Sweetheart
2. Jawbox
3. Novelty
4. Grippe

They got a bit more melodic later on, so if you like that, I'd go with the self-titled next (which was their final proper album). The Burning Airlines is also in the same vein and I agree with the others, it's very good.
