So what external hard drives are you Mac user using? I've been looking around and a lot of the hard drives I've looked at are compatible with a Mac, but the software that runs the automatic update is not. So obviously it doesn't do dick for me.

So what are you guys using?

I just ordered one off of MacMall...250 gigs for $120. You need to get a program called Carbon Copy Cloner, and everything will work fine.

(Well, I hope, I haven't actually plugged the new one in yet ;) )

automatic update? i don't know what that means. you shouldn't have to update anything in your external hard drive.

I've got a acomdata 200 gig HD; Don't know anything about automatic update either. Its USB, so I swap it between my mac and pc no problem.

I'm assuming the external is backing up an internal.

I've been using the OWC Firewire drives for a couple of years now with great success. I have an 80gb as a backup for all my iTUNES files, and a 160gb for Pro-Tools files. I learned a valuable lesson a couple of years ago which is to always leave about 1/4 of your disk space free.

80gb ($150.00)

160gb ($175.00)

I usually build my own from a case and an internal drive. It is pretty easy, and usually is a lot cheaper. Plus it gives you more flexibility for the future in swapping out hard drives with PC's. (I assume an external would be able to do this too, but you might have to break into the case.)

Then the operating system software should be able to do that--you shouldn't need 3rd party software.

Operating system software?
Does windows have an automatic backup feature? Or are you referring to the Mac OS?

Do you know how to do it on a Mac? Then I wouldn't have to do anything as far as replacing the HD I have here.

I don't. And a quick googling makes me think there might not be any included or free backup software for macs. That's ludicrous.

You could pay $100/year for a .mac membership :wanker:
